Italian breeder visit (or "I think I'm missing the puppy gene")

So I braved Florence traffic and went to see a very nice Italian breeder yesterday. I learned a lot (she is very keen on genetic testing), got some good tips and got to hang out with six 6-week-old puppies for three hours. But the same thing keeps happening when I go to see a breeder who currently has puppies: I'm much more interested in cuddling the mama dog or the other grown dogs than the puppies.

The breeder actually had two females (adults) and one was not there, so a little disappointing. Then after a brief intro to mama dog, I got shuffled into the puppy room. I told her I'd actually really rather hang out with the mama dog but the breeder thought I was joking. I guess most people are all about the puppies.

They WERE super cute (4 chocs, 2 blacks) and what a nice set up. She had pee pads taped down in four corners of the room and the rest of the room is covered by soft blankets and toys, all spotlessly clean. Those little pups (6 weeks old) would just go right to the corners of the room to wee on a pad and not do a thing on the blankets. It was really amazing. And in the middle of it all, she had a WHITE COUCH which was also pristine. I think that breeder was some sort of magician.

I guess six week old puppies are not into the crocopup stage because no one was bitey with me (they were a bit with each other). Mainly they looked sleepy and kept falling asleep on top of me. They were gorgeous little things but once again it was mama dog that I just loved. This pretty much keeps happening to me - a breeder shows me puppies but I make jokes about wanting to kidnap their adult dog (and it's not really a joke!). Is that weird? I think I'm missing the puppy gene! o_O

Adult dogs are a lot more interesting than puppies. It's the same in humans, I find ;)

My husband refers to babies (including our own) as baby shaped objects. They definitely get more fun with age :D

I have to say I think puppies are a bit boring! They are cute, but adult dogs have much more personality, are much more interesting to train, are generally more fun and are not as annoying! Good job puppies grow up, really! :D

Oh thank you (and the others) - I was really starting to feel a little monster-esque! I do really like seeing pics here of puppies and hearing the stories and of course those puppies yesterday were sweet little things, but the adult dogs seem so much more fun. I don't remember feeling that way before. But more and more I am starting to think that I've actually blocked out most of the tiny puppy period for my own boys. I mean, they couldn't have been angels ALL the time the way I remember it, right?

Puppies are cute, but adult dogs are amazing, so full of personality..would always pick the adults to engage with over the cutie-pies.

I just love dogs generally - adult dogs, puppies, really old dogs.

If there's dog in the vacinity, I'm making friends with it - drives OH mad!

Used to drive Brogan nuts when I'd fawn all over puppies and other dogs during our walks. When he got older, he's literally roll his eyes, let out a big huff, and make a big show of laying down. He knew we'd be there a while.
