We had a super long night last night with Titan. I let him sleep from about 7pm to 9pm (which I probably should not have done) and then when it was time for everyone to crawl into bed around 11pm, I couldn't get puppy to settle down. After a bit he did settle and fell asleep on the bathroom floor (he currently sleeps in the bathroom in our bedroom). I woke up at about 2:30am to whining, so I got up and took him outside. He peed and then wanted back in so I thought he was finished. We came back in and proceeded to go back to bed, but again he wouldn't settle down. This time barking to be let on the bed, but when I would let him up (as I don't mind if he ends up sleeping in bed with us at all!) he would just bite my boyfriends ears, trying to get him to play. I put him back in his little area in the bathroom with his big bear, in hopes that he would snuggle in and fall asleep but that was a no-go. Tried to just ignore his crying, but it turned into howling. I got back up and took him back outside but he really just wanted to play. I ended up having to put him in our other bathroom, so we could sleep a little bit (my boyfriend has finals all day today for his schooling). Thankfully, once in the other bathroom he fell asleep fairly quickly. Just needed to vent a bit as I'm (not so) patiently waiting the day I can get a full nights sleep again!
I feel for you! Scully is a very vocal pup and only last week we were despairing that we'd never get a full night's sleep again... We're doing much better this week (she's about a month older than Titan).
It's funny, cause I was just saying the night before last that I thought we were starting to do better. We were still up once a night, but he was settling back to bed just fine. And then last night happened haha. Hoping tonight goes better!
Also bf's finals went great! He got Top Student which he's quite proud of since at 27 he hasn't been a student for a long time Maybe Titan will sleep tonight in celebration haha!
Ah, you see, Titan just KNEW that your boyfriend needed a disturbed night's sleep to get JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT of adrenaline in the veins to give him top performance. Titan really wanted to sleep all night, but he was willing to sacrifice his own comfort just to make sure your BH had the right treatment. Good puppy. (Now, Titan, GO TO SLEEP!)
That's a lot of attention for a puppy that wants to play in the night! It sounds like he was successful in getting you up multiple times, and got lots of human attention for whining. I'd stop trying different things at night to get him to settle e.g. letting him up on the bed, changing where he sleeps and so on. Completely appreciate that you were trying to make sure your boyfriend got his sleep that night, but normally don't do this. Make sure he is sleeping somewhere that he feels safe - think about whether the bathroom is a good place, I don't imagine he spends much time in the bathroom during the day. A crate near you, or in a remote room, might be better. Or a pen, even better. If he is really distressed, by all means sit with him a bit to give him company (e.g. just outside a crate) until you have finished training him to be ok on his own, or have him close by you. But don't be moving him around, seeing if he'll settle on the bed and so on. That's a good reward for making a fuss in the night.
He actually prefers to sleep in the bathroom, that's the only reasons he's in there! I think he finds the floor nice and cool. Last night was so much better. We went to bed around 1030, he settled to sleep almost right away. He got up around 1, so I took him out quickly and when he came back in he went straight back to bed until 730 this morning!
Ok! That wasn't exactly clear from your first post - it didn't much sound like he was settling in the bathroom - otherwise you wouldn't be exhausted.
Hi all, Riley is now 15 months old and she sleeps for about 16 hours a day. She sleeps all through the night about 10 hours then on and off throughout the day. Is this about normal? I take her out for a walk each morning for about an hour as well as playing out in the back yard during the day. She does enjoy learning new tricks and is very interested (or just nosey) in whatever we are doing during the day. What do you think?
Hi @Kelsey Danielle glad you had a better night and hope they have continued. @BigDutch my boy sleeps all night too and sleeps quite a bit during the day too - depends what we are doing. If we are at home and busy he takes himself off to his bed and snoozes away, then will come and investigate what we are doing. Right now I am sitting on the settee listening to snoring from both my OH and from Bailey - while draped across the OH lap! Oh well may as well join them
