Larks will be 15 weeks tomorrow. She's doing awesome with potty training and hasn't had an accident at our house in probably 3-4 weeks. However there is one problem. I'm a full time nanny and Larks comes to work with me. Whenever we are upstairs at my nanny family's house she pees! I make sure to let her out to potty every time before we go upstairs but within 10-15 minutes she squats and goes with no whining or warning. I always snatch her up and say "no!" and bring her directly out to potty outside. It's so frustrating because she doesn't ever have an accident if we are downstairs, but the little boys room is upstairs and so if the playroom. Our house is only 1 story, so could that be confusing her? Any suggestions are welcome I'm at my wits end with this problem.
Yes, she's not potty trained in that area. The only answer is to go back to square one when up there - like you did when initially potty training her.
Agree - she needs to be in a crate, just like in the beginning. Plus make sure all the areas where she has had a wee are completely cleaned up with appropriate cleaner so no smell is lingering to encourage her.
We always have this when we eventually allow our pups on carpet (at about 16 weeks) we have to watch them like hawks at first.
I do clean with the appropriate cleaner so there is no smell. So everytime we go upstairs I should bring the crate up there and put her in it? She NEVER has an accident in her crate, so I'm not sure if that will help her lean not to wee upstairs if she isn't out and about up there.
Even from day 1 she could still go 20 minutes without peeing. Should I just limit it to 10 minutes at a time upstairs for now?
It's absolutely standard practice to use a crate so a puppy learns to hold on to wee. This is how most puppies learn toilet training. In between toilet trips, you can put her in a crate, carry her, or supervise her every second (in which case you can't look after children as well).
Like you did when initially potty training her, let her have freedom up there just after she's had a wee outside - ten minutes at first. Then, slowly, lengthen the time. If she widdles, make the free time less again. Keep her in the crate when not otherwise very closely supervised. ...
We got one from pets at home, there was loads in there. Ammonia based ones can sometimes make them think there's still a smell of wee. The one we got smelt really nice, but now everytime I smell it I remember following him around cleaning up little widdles constantly! (Poor Stanley had a UTI when he arrived so was piddling every minute or so )
