Hi All I know this will of been asked a million times, but I would like some new info on suitable chew items for my Puppy, Rolo is 13 weeks now, He enjoys kongs but only licks them to get the contents, and generally has them when we leave the house. I bought a puppy Nylabone which he destroyed and ate some of (not much) in minutes so I had to remove that. He eats carrots within minutes, and Im looking for something longer lasting for him, I dont know if hes allowed real animal bones and I dont want to give him rawhide due to the bad things ive heard. Can anyone please shed some light on there experiences/ideas. Im in the UK If that makes a difference. Thanks
Pizzles (sometimes called bully sticks) lasted a while when mine were pups. They are quite expensive, and I don't feed them anymore - well, once in a blue moon - because they last a matter of minutes, but they were pretty good before the big gnashers came in. I know they give some pups the squits, but I didn't have that problem. FYI, they are actually dehydrated bull penis. Yummers!
I give Stanley rawhide. He seems to enjoy them and they don't affect him badly. He also likes pigs ears and they last him quite a while
Pizzles/bully sticks give Cooper the runs.....so does rawhide. I have found bones that have been "treated" and have absolutely nothing in the middle the best for him...he is a big chewer.....I do not get the bones from a butcher....I buy them from Pet Stores that carry them....unfortunately, I dont have the name since Cooper has the last three I bought out on the floor!!! So he chews on one, then decides he will chew the other, and so on. Got them from Amazon, Chewy and other on-line stores. I am in the USA. He also chews on Nylabones....I am shocked that Rolo was able to destroy one!!WOW!!! Good chewer!!! If you go on line and check under "bones" you will see REDBARN Natural White bones....Good luck!
I use the sterilised bones which are filled, take the yucky filling out and fill with soaked kibble, then freeze. They last the dogs about half an hour. They get one each after meals to prevent hoolying on full tums and one for settling when visitors come, so I make six a day - out of their food allowance. They never get them unsupervised, I use Kongs for that. They last a lot longer than Kongs as the dogs can't 'squidge' them to get the food out. Here they are -
Yep, pizzle sticks last quite a bit at that age. I also used butcher's bones during teething because they lasted even longer. I've switched to rawhide now because I don't want her to damage her teeth. If I lived in the UK I'd buy a chew root, they look fabulous.
Rice bones were Bailey's favourites (and still are although now they last a blink of an eye), or rawhide - he has a cast iron stomach and really seems to love his rawhide chews
This 'dogs need to chew thing'....well, really? By the time they are a few months old raw meaty bones last them seconds - it's not like they provide hours of entertainment....Charlie scoffs down a duck neck in microseconds.... I think dogs should settle down after sufficient mental and physical exercise and that's that. I do think Kongs are fabulous, because they reward a dog for settling down. A dog that is chewing a kong is settled, and has its bum on the floor and is quiet. That's all you need. All these pigs ears, and rawhide and so on - empty calories that are fatty and might upset tums. I just don't do these anymore.

Kongs are expensive! Then again, with the money I've been spending on rawhide I could have bought a stack of Kongs...
Ah, but you only have to buy them once, and then keep refilling them. Ours have lasted two years so far and get used daily. They work out cheaper in the end. Have a browse around, too. Our local pet shop sells the large size for €17, but online, I can get them for £5.99 each!!!
That's so cheap! I found them for anywhere between $20-$48 (£13-£30)depending on size. I do agree that they work out cheaper in the end though. Our only issue with Kongs is that Ella throws them around the house
I like to provide things to chew on occasion just for variety. Sometimes a Kong (which is really for licking when I use them), sometimes a rawhide chew (no squitty bum here), sometimes dried beef tendons or dried beef hearts. The rawhide lasts the longest, but he doesn't sit & chew until it's finished (which he does with the others), I put it out of reach when he leaves it, and return it another time. Coco doesn't get chews every day. None of these are ever unsupervised, I worry about choking.
I got Riley a chew root from Amazon and she loves it, it's the only thing that has not been distroyed by her. They are quite expensive but the amount of money we have spent on other so called long lasting chew toys they are well worth it. The black Kongs last a long time as well although Riley can still distroy them given the chance.
Hi @Boogie we do the same and fill bones with soaked kibble and sardines then pop in the freezer. My old dogs on special food so she feels like she's having a treat (even though it is her food) and Winnie loves to chomp away. They're always supervised and i found it really helped Winnie in that teething phase, cold bones that she does chew on. I laugh every weekend as I wash and refill 8 kongs and at least 10 bones to keep them going in the week!
