I'm so confused, I thought nylabones were safe for dogs. Corona has only just showed interest in her nylabone the last couple of days. I took them back out of my stash of chew toys, hoping she would show some interest in them since she really isn't supposed to eat anything other than her restricted diet food for the next bit. She is really wanting to chew this past week or so, must be teething, and other than a large bully stick that she can only gnaw on, I really can't find anything else that is chew proof that she can't actually eat. Well after only 10 minutes, she chewed a corner right off. I thought perhaps the small was just too small for her now and gave her a larger one. She chewed a piece of the corner off of that one too! Thankfully, she was being supervised in both instances and they were removed. Are there different nylabones for heavy chewers? What else can I give her that she can chew but not actually digest? I have an antler and a benebone and she really isn't all that fond of either one. And I use stuffed kongs (with her special food) when she is crated.
we recently bought Sparky a pig femur bone. we stuff it like a kong. he loves it. he can't put it down even when its sucked dry unlike his kongs which he forgets about once he empties them out. he has scratched up the insides of it since he teething a whole lot this week. no cracks yet, but we are monitoring.
That is some chewing! Dexter is pretty determined but he's never got chunks off a nylabone ,,they just get whittled away over time ,they get taken straight off him if I see him cranking up....when I first joined the Forum I remember a discussion about the thumb nail rule and how in order to protect their teeth never let them chew anything that you can't make an impression in with your thumb nail.....so my new antler went straight back to the pet shop.....And for me,frozen kongs have been the choice.I made good use of cardboard when Dexter was little, you get good chewing value out of a box with just a few prices of kibble / food inside. X
We used cardboard too (still do) when Bailey was teething. Also frozen carrots and frozen chicken wings as they seemed to sooth his gums and he would also play with them before settling down for a chew. He still likes carrots now, although he can't have too many as they can make his tummy a bit loose. We have to watch him with everything as he is a determined chewer when he gets going - his long legged monkey that he's had since he arrived has had to have major reconstructive surgery three times in as many days!
Nybone do a puppy one I had to change adult dog for my last pup. He could destroy the pup ones easily. he could take chunks out of anything he even ate his crate handles. I had to take them off. The only think he can have and not destroy are black khongs and adult nybone big ones not the little ones he can destroy them too. He is a he'll beast
Charlie eats nylabones. He just chews to eat and he chews nylabones up and eats them. I do not think they are safe things to give to dogs. The ones for heavy chewers are so hard you'd struggle to break them with a hammer. I don't see the sense in this. If a dog chews in such a way that you have to give them something so hard it's a risk to teeth... it just seems madness to give them these things. I don't use antlers or such like either. You could try rawhide - try to get good quality stuff though as some people worry about the chemicals that are in it, and it does upset tummies sometimes. But really, if you have a power chewer, the best and safest things are just kongs. And clean her teeth with a toothbrush.
Mine like rabbits ears but don't give them when sensitive relatives are around as they can be upset when thumpers ears get chomped
It's not easy if you are trying to restrict her diet too. What about getting an old towel, soaking it and then freezing it hard? If she is teething she might find the cold comforting (I know that Pongo did). And once it is de-frosted you can always re-soak it and re-freeze... The downside is a possible damp carpet.... but it is only water.
Libby likes bully sticks but they are so expensive. this weekend, I bought a rawhide bone made out of compressed rawhide. It's taking her a while to chew it and they were inexpensive.
Some nylabones have flavour and scent infused into them. I imagine it's all synthetic but if Corona has diet restrictions you might want to be sure you didn't buy one of those. Yes, nylabones come rated for chewing hardness. For teething I did as Rosie except I already had two of those white rope bones. I soaked then froze them and rotated them. They turned RED with the blood. A bit scary to see them. A Golden Retriever puppy's neck ruff also makes a good teething outlet, as per Oban and his friend. Talk about scary, the puppy's thick neck ruff was covered in bright red blood and it alarmed some other dog walkers. GR are not digestible though, if that's your main concern, at least not by other puppies.
I've had this happen, it depends on the nylabone. I always supervise when they have one. There's a giant one which is great - no chunks, just little specks come off. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product...g_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=761KRXMJASKAQ54WF0NT ...
Hmmm. Back to the pet store to see what I can find. I've done some reading last night and was shocked to see how many pets had to have surgery because they swallowed bits of nylabones. Considering Corona already has anal gland issues and we are currently trying to resolve a loose stool problem, I'm leaning towards kong brand chew toys. It's either that or the couch! Thanks! Ive never heard of using cardboard?? You give them a cardboard box and let them tear it to shreds? Don't they eat the cardboard? Corona eats EVERYTHING, which is probably the reason she is having soft stool issues, I'm positive she would eat the cardboard.
Yup just leave the box in the middle of the room and he rips it into a million and ten pieces - to begin with we watched him like a hawk to make sure he didn't eat the cardboard but he's always just spat it out. Evidence of this is the amount of soggy cardboard I find on the floor!
Yes,Dexter didn't really eat any either and to be honest if he did eat a bit ,it's only soggy paper....I'm confident it would have passed through ok bearing in mind some of the other horrible things he's snaffled in his lifetime! I used toilet rolls ,kitchen rolls ,put a few pieces of food in and twist the ends and you really do get good mileage for the amount of food ......the best boxes ever are iPad and iPhone boxes, they are so solid they last ages ...of course In all this you have to not mind your house looking a bit of a rubbish tip!
Libby likes cardboard boxes, too. Anytime I'm done with one in the kitchen, I give it to her and she prances away with it in her mouth like she has a real prize. I keep a stack of old manila file folders in my office and she'll grab one of those off the pile too. RIIPPPPPP!!! I think that's why she likes my husbands sandals with the Velco straps. She loves the sound of that Velcro.
