    Hi everyone,

In our quest to end Archie's itching, we have changed him to a new grain-free kibble and gone dairy-free. The new food cost a small fortune, and, of course, he detests it!

I have found that I can get him to eat it if I put a raw egg on top, but if I do that three times a day, I'm worried that might be too many eggs. Anyone have any ideas on this? I'd mix it up and put cottage cheese or shredded cheese on top of a meal but can't as we are cutting dairy out of his diet.

I've seen conflicting information on the safety of eggs online (no surprise, right?!?) so wonder if someone has any firsthand info.

    Thanks in advance.
Deb and Itchy...er... I mean Archie

    Raw eggs themselves are fine.
    3 a day seems excessive.
Is there anything else you could add. Just warm water, small amount of tuna/oil, doggy gravy?
Too many exclusions in a diet, or too much of any one thing isn't terribly healthy in my opinion

with the proviso that a good kibble should be nutrient complete.

I knew of a dog who was very ill and died because he had too many raw eggs. It is the white of the egg which is the problem, causes biotin defficiency, so either just give the yoke or cook the egg. However, I would not feed three eggs a day, is it possible to put just a tablespoon of a good canned meat on top?

Oh my gosh. Thanks so much for the info, I will definitely look into another solution. I was wary to go with a canned meat in case it gave him the runs, but a wee bit might do the trick of getting him to eat the new food. It is nutritionally complete, but it is salmon-based and he seems to not be a fan of fish.

I am so glad to have found this board! Thanks again.

We do give the occasional egg, 1-2 per week, from our own chickens.

I add this gluten and grain free wet food based on 70% salmon to our older dogs food. He has such a small kibble allowance,( we have to watch his weight very carefully) adding a few tablespoons adds to the enhancement of his meal, whilst bulking it out a bit.

I have a friend that is adding some coconut oil to her dogs food and he has been loving it.

I give Finn a little salmon oil over his kibble. Sometimes coconut oil. It depends what's in the house....

I pour about a table spoon ful of cod liver oil onto H's food when I remember or have not run out. He also sometimes gets tinned pilchards, just one or two then I keep the others in a sealed container for the next day.
My dad often gave his hogs a raw egg, not every day but now and then.
He eats up all his food regardless but I like to treat him now and then.

Xena's breeder had told us not to feed raw egg until 6 months. I gave her a cooked egg a couple of times a week until 12 weeks, and she had the odd raw egg from our chooks until 6 months. Now she has "raw egg day" on Monday and Thursday night.

Yep, I would agree that 3 eggs a day seems like a a lot of eggs for one dog, though I don't know if it's actually dangerous in any way. Mine used to get average one a day and that seemed to worked well for him (but I did hard-boil them first).

If the kibble costs a fortune, would you consider just going the home-cooked route? It's really not hard, you know exactly what is going in to it and you can easily adjust it to find the balance of foods that work best for Archie. Plus if you and he are essentially eating the same basic stuff (unless you are vegetarian/vegan), so it makes shopping really easy. Dairy and grain free is easy peasy as you just don't put them into the mix.

But if you just want to make your existing food more palatable, I've never seen a dog who wouldn't eat his dinner if you put a bit of crumbled up freshly cooked liver on it. Mine also loved bananas, but I think he was a little weird that way. :p
