I don't remember Charlie's 'dropping' at all! As I remember, he came with plums, and still has them...
Have you spoken to your vet? In the longer term, if it doesn't drop, he may need surgery. But.......I just have a girl, no idea what they are supposed to do!
I don't remember Stanley not having them.. they're just significantly bigger now. And he REALLY likes to show them off
This is the rest I pressed the wrong things. If he still has one it can be a problem it means the other one still in there. Your vet will be able to advise you but he will probably have castrated your pup if the testicle does not desend.
I thought boy bits were all present and correct by about 8 weeks? I might have that wrong, but if I had a 5 month old dog without, I'd have a chat with a vet.
They usually have little boy buds by 8 weeks some can take longer. Rorys are like space hoppers...... he told to say this
My boys didn't drop and he had to have surgery to get them out. They can turn cancerous if they don't drop, or so I've been told.
Shadow didn't come home until 14 weeks, but I have a strong recollection of taking him to the vet for his first check-up, the vet "cupping" him and counting "uno....dos!", so his must have been there then. Agree, a conversation with the vet is probably the best idea.
Molly's all agog too As others have said, best to get him checked out. As I recall with my previous dogs - all boys - they were fully 'in place' by 12 weeks.
Oh no! I thought it was normal, as when we took him to the vet for his checkup the vet just casually stated the other one hadn't dropped yet, and that was all he said about it. So my thought was...ok, it will eventually and it's fine. I'll definitely give them a call now.
The vet didn't even know about this :/ Apparently it's a 10 fold increase in the risk of developing testicular cancer. The one inside can become cut off from blood supply and become tumorous. At any rate the vet advised we should neuter anytime after 6 months. We're moving soon and will be getting a new vet so I'm going to get a second opinion on the time-frame, as I'm not too impressed with this current vet...
Bailey had little "buds" at 8 weeks when we first got him, I asked our vet to check all were present and correct when he was 12 weeks old (Bailey VERY unimpressed with that bit of the exam!) and two weeks ago a different vet checked (nope no better this time according to Bailey!). Vet did say that they wanted to make sure both were there as yes if one is still not dropped it can turn cancerous. Fingers crossed your new vet will be a bit more informed!
Undescended testicles do have quite an increased risk of cancerous changes. Not sure how quickly that happens. If you are planning an earlyish neuter for other reasons then fair enough, but bear in mind boys in particular benefit from having their hormones hanging around for a bit to benefit their bones and joints. Might be worth negotiating with your present/future vet the optimum time for the pick-pocketing weighing up risks and benefits. Maybe don't just whip them off?
That is my thought process as well. We weren't sure if we were going to neuter him at all but now we don't have a choice. I am hoping to wait til he is about 1 1/2 years, but will discuss with a future vet what the risk is of waiting. I read somewhere while researching all of this that it's best to do it before two years of age, but that was just one article so who knows. Hopefully we can wait til he's a year at least.
I'm not the expert on boys and neutering. @JulieT is though Humans would have surgery to bring the testicle down - testicles benefit from swinging in the cool breeze. Not sure if compromised blood supply is the issue but I'm not a vet. I guess you could discuss other options ? There is very little comparable in human medicine to the total amputation of gonads without replacement hormones, so my knowledge here is limited.
