I've always slightly struggled to find treats that really do hold up in the face of distractions. I just don't seem to have dogs that will forget about exciting things for food! Betsy is much, much easier than Charlie though. Anyway, OH did the fish4dogs order this month, and ordered some 'squid bites'. Oven baked squid. Gosh, they stink. They seriously stink. The dogs love them! I looked like I had a well behaved puppy at group training today!
Hmmm I don't reckon fresh squid would have the punge Fiona,I think it's got to be the good old dehydrated version? I'm trying Salmon4pets freeze dried white fish bites at the moment ( fish4dogs has gone off our shelves again for some reason) they have the punge I can tell you!Dexter has just leapt up,out of the deepest snooze when I went to the cupboard to check the name! Ordered! I used to get stinky tripe but the source was revealed as dodgy. Tatze will do anything for something stinky!!
Yuck, yuck, yuck. And I thought fresh tripe was nasty. On the other hand, from the pups' point of view, I can see how this must be SUPER yummy.
I think I need to up my stinky treat game! At training class the other night there was a couple there with a 5 month old Alsatian. He was huge (absolutely adorable, but completely bonkers) and they had bought kibble as treats. He completely ignored everything they said! They just couldn't understand why Stanley was sitting calmly next to me. I gave them some sausages and cheese and he miraculously turned into a much better behaved dog. They were amazed
Yep. I knew someone who very carefully baked sort of 'cheese squares' for his dog before training, then claimed his dog wasn't interested in food. I'm not surprised, the cheese squares were mainly flour! The dog would work for my treats alright.
When I was taking my devil rescue toy poodle to classes, the ONLY thing that worked was stopping at McDonald's right before class and getting him a medium order of fries. It was the only treat he'd do anything for. Don't ask me how I discovered that fries worked...I certainly would NEVER eat fast food and then share it with my dogs.
I was thinking of dehydrating it myself I was forced to eat McDonald's the other night. I offered both dogs a chip. Shadow thought I was trying to poison him. It's entirely possible I was. McD's is grim.
Have you got a dehydrator? Is that what you call them? I've got a function on my new cooker and it was in my mind to give it a go with some liver? Just haven't got round to trying it yet x
The funny thing is that after I stopped eating it myself regularly and started feeding Brogan home-cooked meals only, he wouldn't eat fries anymore either, not even when I made them at home for myself. He'd take one in his mouth if I handed it to him and then spit it out. Bad when your dog has a better handle on nutrition than you do. On the other hand, he LOVED tortilla chips. You can take the dog out of California, but you can't take the California out of the dog. And yes, I totally agree that it is "grim" but I still do get McD or equivalent on the motorway when doing my cross-Europe drives. It's a really bad habit! I bought an in-car refrigerator for Brogan for his fresh food, so I should fill it now with my own fresh food to cure me of my addiction...
I don't have one, no. I'll be getting one so I can dehydrate and excess fruits when we have our fruit trees in Spain, but for now I just use my oven. For liver, I just bake it until it's cooked through. Far quicker than dehydrating it I'm not completely anti fast food - it has a time and a place. It just has to taste of something Burger King, KFC... they taste good once in a while. But this? Eugh. Apparently, I chose the wrong thing, everyone is telling me
I'm ashamed to admit my hangover cure of choice is a large selection of the McDonald's menu. When I first started seeing OH and used to go over his brother would sometimes be there with his dog. Ellie is a Staffie with a few agggresive behaviours. Every time she would be there she used to growl and snarl at me and I'd just keep out of her way. One time I was sat at the table, hungover, munching away at my McNuggets when she came booling through the door and sat infront of me. So I offered her a nugget and she gobbled it right up. After that day we've been firm friends
What makes laugh is that, well I adore chocolate. If this thread was about chocolate, I would be interested, but would I rush out to buy the latest fabulous chocolate bar/cake/pudding?? Now here's the thing....a thread about squid? Stinky, dehydrated squid?? OK..I have just caught myself wondering if I order some today...will it possibly arrive by the weekend? How did this happen????
My family constantly remind me that Hattie & Charlie get far more treats than they do It's odd isn't it, I bought some of those squid strips months ago and my dogs couldn't have cared less about them Now if I make my smelly pilchard cake that's a different thing altogether, Hattie would dance on one paw for those and they cost absolutely peanuts to make x
My son's boxer got a bag of Lamb Lung treats in a Bark Box awhile back and we ended up with them. They smell BAD. Libby loves them!
