Hi all! Stanleys nearly 8 months old now and he still squats when he pees. Is this normal? When did all your males starting lifting their legs to pee? Thanks
It is a bit later than you think....I reckon Charlie started around 7 or 8 months, but he didn't really get into it until about 10 months to a year. It will happen, never fear.... Now he's a big boy, Charlie cannot see the point of having a pee unless it's to mark a vertical structure. His ambition is to pee on every vertical structure in the world. Twice. I wouldn't be in a rush for it, if I were you!
Yeah it's a real pain once they figure it out Axel only started a couple weeks ago and he's 11 months. Now every tree, bush, pole etc he must leave a story. Odie figured it out much sooner, around 5 months old. But he doesn't mark at all. He won't even pee unless absolutely necessary until we are home
Oban was 8 months. He fell over a couple of times at first. I like it, no more standing in his own pee in the snow, it all hits the snowbank. The most interesting thing is how happy it made the OH to see his dog pee "like a big boy."
No. It's a bit of a pain, tbh. Training him to only go sniff to mark when on lead on cue is helpful...otherwise he'll spend 6 months trying to drag you to every tree and lamppost in sight...
That's actually the reason I asked. We were walking Stanley today and OH asked when he would start peeing like a man
Shadow still pees like a girl when he's on snow at home! But would never dream of doing so in public. I think he started around 6 months. Agree that you're best to teach him a "go sniff" cue. Shadow recently (last few months) really started wanting to mark eveywhere, so I've brushed off his "go sniff" and it makes a massive difference. After our walk this afternoon, he walked 1km back home on quite smelly paths without pulling to sniff at all. It pays to work on it

Or last Lab Cooper, never peed "like a big boy". Not sure why, except he was the only male in his litter and had only a brief exposure to other male dogs. Bailey at 8 and a half months also still squats and has shown no interest in lifting his leg. I'm not sure how he will go peeing by lifting his leg as he has no balance when using a back paw to scratch. It may be amusing to watch!
My old Labrador Storm was over 13 when we lost him and always squatted. He was desexed at 6 months, I found it very strange that he would never lift his leg. Bear is nearly 9 months now and also so far no leg lifting
Shadow was very wobbly when he first started He's actually just started scratching the ground after weeing sometimes - maybe once a week - and he always has a good wobble doing that, too.
Coco only really started in earnest after his second birthday. He still squats at home in the garden, but MOSTLY, he will cock his leg when we're out. In the last month or so has he begun marking frequently. Regarding balance - our main road walk wakes us along a sod-hedge, which is like a wall covered with grass and weeds - he did initially prop his cocked leg on the hedge, no wobble.
Alfie is 9 months and lifts his leg on when it is a little wee - I think he struggles to balance and hold his leg if its a long wee lol
My first boy NEVER lifted his leg. My family always had girl dogs, so I just thought this was normal until other people pointed out how funny it was to see this big bruiser of 120 lb. male squatting for a wee.
I don't think I've seen Charlie squat to pee for ages. He even cocks his leg to poo! He is so committed to marking, that if I ask him to have a wee when there is nothing to mark, he whines unhappily, will squeeze a few drops out, then inspect his boy bits as though to say 'that hurt, you know!'. Really....ridiculous dog.
Ella only lady-squats but she does mark when we're out and about. If we walk from the house (rather than driving somewhere for a walk) I can tell you each place she'll squeeze out a wee within 3km of the house
