Recap of Corona's weekend: ate toxic berries, vomited continuously. Received activated charcoal to absorb toxins, and a shot to stop vomiting. Follow up at emergency clinic when she continued to vomit and lick the floor Doctor there diagnosed her with having something stuck between her throat and esophagus, maybe from vomiting. Gave her canned food and she was cured. Corona was crated for an hour in the early evening with her nighttime bed, since kong bed was wet from being washed. She then shredded some of it and ate some of the foam padding. Pooped some padding out Sunday but seems fine otherwise. Had a very restless unsettled day yesterday and vomited undigested food at 4:30am. (Will I ever get any sleep??). Currently back at the vet today for blood work and X-rays. She has a very tender abdomen but is otherwise bright an she playful. Checking for onset pancreatitis and obstruction. This is insane!!! I NEVER would have gotten another dog if I knew what I know now! Sorry if that sounds awful, as sweet as she is, but I am completely exhausted with these constant vet visits and extra work from her laundry list of issues. Feeling very discouraged.

I remember feeling like this too when Duncan was at the vet nonstop for the first months and months of having him... It gets better! I do think part of it is because they are puppies and putting everything in their mouths and labs who are piglets that want to eat everything... and I think it does get better and will for you too once you find a food that works for your pup and once this issue passes - I hope you also saw the link I put on a previous thread for some ear drops that have really worked for us to prevent ear infections! and try a general dog eye rinse for whenever you come in from outside or at nighttime at least before pup goes to bed for the eye infections! We were exhausted and thought we would never have a healthy puppy for longer than a week at a time at one point, but once we found a food that worked and some eye drops/ear drops we have finally stopped seeing the vet every week! For them putting everything in their mouths and trying to eat everything - training them "drop" and "leave it" was what really worked for us - I trained "drop" and "leave it" nonstop with very high value rewards so it would be engrained in him and he would always respond to it and now on walks whenever he tries to pick up old food or whatever else I can say "leave it" and he pauses and sits and looks up at me instead of going for it or if he manages to grab something in his mouth without me seeing I can say "drop it" and he will drop it out of his mouth Sending you lots of encouragement!
Upon closer examination of Corona's "vomit", that I thought OH had flushed, I've discovered that it's not undigested food at all. It's large pieces of foam from her bedding after all. It was 59 hours AFTER she ate it! I can't believe that she was keeping anything down this whole time. Somehow, food has been getting passed, because she has had bowel movements since then. Maybe it was lodged somewhere and has since moved? Who knows. Waiting for the vet to call me back.
Poor Corona and poor you! Unfortunately puppies can be such hard work on so many ways...after my last puppy I swore I would never get another one. Turns out Simba was around 9 months when we got him and we certainly had issues to work through with him but on the whole, my resolution to never get another puppy stands. Hope she will get through this episode without much more fuss, and that you don't see the vet's office again until WELL into 2017!!
Oh dear, I hope all is well. It certainly makes you wonder why on earth it's a good idea to have pets, especially dogs. They can be such a worry...
Corona is back home now. After X-rays a second time, they still can't confirm that all the foam is out. It really doesn't show well on the X-rays and there were a couple questionable areas. She is still eating and seems bright but definitely not the energy I'm used to seeing. We are waiting for bloodwork results and have to keep a close (even closer than before if that's even possible) eye on her. If she vomits more foam, she needs a barium X-ray from there. Total bill since Saturday is just reaching $1000 Canadian. Ouch that hurts!
Oh goodness, what a rough trot you've had. I hope Corona is back to herself soon (minus the eating poisonous items and furniture of course). Hang in there, as others have said, it really does get better. I remember the spay, repeated uti's, infected ear, allergic reaction to bee sting, rash on belly, ringworm etc all within a couple of months! Thinking back on it, I'm not so sure that the crocopup stage was the worst part of having a puppy!
Its strange but when Rory s colitis was at it's most painful he would scramble to eat anything . he was worse than your average pup I think the pain and hunger caused this irrational food grabing.His stress made him worse and he would do things like corona. It was a hard time but slowly we got through it. I do sorry your having such a hard time. Rorys 3 now and despite a rocky start a wonderful dog. Corona will be too it's just all about the vets at the moment and its horrible
I'm so sorry to hear this. What a tough time you're having a poor Corona too. No advice I'm afraid but tons of sympathy for you. Fingers crossed all is sorted for you and Corona very soon. xx
We were also in the vets constantly when Harley was a pup. The receptionist even knew it was me calling before I told them my name! We had constantly tummy issues, chest infection, dehydration due to D&V, pyometra etc etc. It does wear you out, but I found when she hit 1 years old the visits to the vet reduced, even now she's only been a few times this year and everytime with cut paws. We experienced the barium x-ray (Quinn apparently lapped the barium right up)...they thought there was a concerning area, but turned out there was nothing in there (she had vomited 3 children's socks and we could not find the others in the house, so were unsure if she had some still in there!). I felt/feel the same way about the vet, a few hundred here, a few there We had worms, eye infections, foreign objects, anal glands, skin infection...they are a constant worry! I'm hoping now that she's hit a year, that the problems will be reduced! I don't know how many more times I can call into work with a "puppy emergency had to go to vet asap!"
Bloodwork is all back and it seems that Corona has some damage to her intestinal lining since she is suffering from low protein. Some other counts are a bit low, some are a bit high. All of this is apparently what the doctor expects to see when a pup has digested a toxin. (Plus a foam bed). It thankfully can be reversed, they think (I hope). She is on meds to reduce the acid in her stomach that is causing cramping and to protect her intestinal lining while it heels. I've only given her one dose so far and she is sleeping the afternoon away, not waking up to pace and pace. Her poor tummy must be feeling better already. Here's to hoping she will sleep past 5:30am! I'm afraid all of these issues she's had over the last 2 months has created a bad habit of waking up very early and not wanting to back to sleep.

That's interesting and makes total sense as well. Corona more than likely was having stomach pain when she was crated for an hour, in the evening, after her ingestion of toxic berries ordeal, early that day. And she has had colitis in the past while also. Maybe that's why she ate her pillow and feels the need to grab at everything. She does seem to do this more than the other 2 Labs we've had. After starting her meds yesterday, she has slept, very comfortably, we're talking upside down with legs all over comfortable. Lol. We haven't seen that in a while. Tells me that her tummy is feeling a bit better. Still up at 5:45 though, but after a pee and a poop, she went back to sleep! Feeling hopeful!
That's exactly it wanting to grab things anything. Like your pup mine goes back to normality when the tummy ache subsides. I can even tell when he's going to have a flare by his behaviour. I get treatment really quickly because i know what's about to happen. So glad she a bit better and hope shes over the worst now. So happy she had a good night
