I let Luna mouth my hands so he can, as you say, learn what is "acceptable" pressure. I think this is an important lesson for her to learn. I'm getting stricter as she gets older, and stop interaction for less than I did at first, but she still gets to find out for herself what the limit is.

Thanks. Hachi is also joining a Puppy Kindergarten class from Saturday. He just had his first round of shots so the class will be indoors and the closed area will be distemper and parvo disinfected. It will be a 7-8 week class (1 hour per week) where he will learn socialization skills and basic learning.

This rather depends on the puppy. I've been able to let Mollie mouth me a lot, she rarely nips or bites too hard. The other four? no - any mouthing drew blood!

I do let Bailey gently mouth my hand, but at the first sign of too much pressure I remove it and put a toy in his mouth instead - he is rougher with my OH but that's because my OH wrestles with him .

Hatchi looks great! Kibs was bitey till about 7 months then it suddenly just stopped. so good luck and dont get too angry at him when he does its just love hahaha. I let him knaw on my arm for a good month just so he knows whats acceptable and what isnt, when he bit too hard I put him in the pen.

Should puppies/dogs be allowed on the couch. I have heard they can have behavioral issues. So, Hachi is jumping on the sofa all the time. I dont know why we allowed him to do so 1-2 days now he always wants to be on the sofa - next to us. I do not have issues with this, I haven't noticed any behavioral changes in him. But I am not sure whether I should allow this - I read it is not advisable. I am having a very hard time asking him to get off the sofa. He loves being next to us on the sofa. The only way he comes down voluntarily is if I sit on the floor or throw a treat - he immediately comes down to me in my lap. He just wants to be with us all the time. Do others in this forum allow pets on the sofa?

I let my dogs on the sofas and beds. I think it's an individual choice and more about whether you want them on your furniture than any behavioral issues. I think the idea that it's bad, at least as far as I know, comes out of that now-debunked "dominance" theory, where if they're on the "same level" as you, they won't "respect" you as alpha. That's all been shown to have no basis in dog-reality.

Ian Dunbar is a good resource particularly for bite inhibition. He is really big on it - and letting them mouth gently so they know what's okay and what's too much. Because then as adult dogs, if they do bite someone (because no dog is bite-proof, and crazy things can happen where they feel they need to bite) they have the inhibition learned so it wouldn't be a full-pressure bite, and thus would cause less damage.

Shadow actually pushed me off the sofa yesterday. Literally, pushed. I was perched on the edge, he climbed up and curled up behind me, then, a few minutes later, stretched out hard. I landed on my bum on the carpet.

I regularly get knocked off the sofa and out of bed! Either that or I am squished into a corner, my OH is squished into the other corner and Bailey is stretched out between us. Bailey is not allowed up on the bed when we first go up but he gets on while we are asleep - he will put a paw on my leg and me being a big softy move my legs so he can curl up at the bottom of the bed...however during the night he creeps up the bed between me and the OH and usually just before my alarm goes off I go to turn over and...bang...I'm on the dogs bed and he is snoring in my bed! Good job he's so cute!

And when I know my Dad is cooking a late night Omelette - I leave my mom on the sofa only to come to kitchen and dose off here :)

He has settled in quickly. And he is very very energetic. I am googling my way - as to how and where to spend his energy.

Hi. one question. Hachi has been there with us for 4 weeks. He is 11.5 weeks now. My spouse is going out of the city for 4 weeks. Just wanted to know when she comes back, will Hachi be able to recognize her. I know dogs can remember but he is still a small puppy - but one thing that works in favor - is that - my spouse spends more time with him than me. I am sure he will miss her a lot in the beginning

@Sudhanshu - yes! He will recognize her. My daughter was with Bessie for only 3 weeks, from 8 to 11 weeks, then went to college for 6 weeks. When she came back, Bessie was overjoyed and couldn't stop licking her and crying at her with joy! Definitely knew who she was. She was only home for a short time, then back for Thanksgiving - and remembered again. :) Same at Christmas.

He's gorgeous and looks so comfy on the couch! He will definitely remember your wife...it's amazing what dogs remember, even when they are little.
