I've seen a few members mention that their dogs love sardines. I bought some for Stanley to mix in his Kongs with his kibble but they're in sunflower oil. When I give him tuna it's in spring water. I couldn't see anything else in sardines. Will sunflower oil be OK - it will be split between 3 kongs. Or do you think it will be too high in fat?
When Sam has sardines or pilchards , he has the ones in tomato sauce , he adores them .I cant give him anything too oily as it upsets his tummy , cant see it actually doing any harm though , to a dog who can tolerate fats x
I give Maisie sardines in tomato sauce too. She's had the ones in oil when I bought them by mistake and was absolutely fine (however, she does have a case iron stomach!!). If you are unsure, you could always drain some of the oil off before giving them to Stanley.
I give Jess sardines. I've used the ones in oil occasionally without any problems, but I do drain off the oil (it's still around the fish though). Waitrose sell sardines in water in their essential waitrose line. They're about 40p a tin.
Most places the ones I could find were in olive oil so I just chucked the whole thing in his dinner. It was just part of my dog's whole meal, not by itself, so maybe all the fat all at once didn't matter so much as he wasn't eating just that. I don't know if I've ever seen sardines canned in tomato sauce...you all are very fancy schmancy!
Hattie and Charlie have sardines in olive oil about 3 times a week. I throw it all in on their kibble. They LOVE them and they are so good for them too! 40p per tin from Waitrose for us too x
Especially served on brown toast with a big spread of lurpack butter between the sardines and the toast...for me,not for the dog ,yum!
Thanks everyone! I think I'll just drain them and see if he likes them. We're yet to find something he doesn't like so I'm sure it will be fine
After a long cold winter dog walk i like nothing better than granary bread toasted with butter and sardines in tomatoes sauce. Oh yum. Doggies love it too
My boy gets a tin of sardines mixed in his kibble every second day - I buy the ones with the tomato sauce too - sixty five cents for the store brand - score! The thought of actually eating them myself is a little barf-worthy, but, hey, each to their own
Sardines are about the richest food source of calcium out there (think Tofu tops it, but not featuring in my diet). I think Rachael @Oberon had some issues with too much calcium in a raw food diet, so I would go with the "remember to vary the diet" advice and don't overuse them. No idea personally of how much is too much, and Rachael's issue I think was related to too much bone to flesh rather than too many sardines
I bought probably 5 tins of sardines a week for Brogan and fed them sort of randomly throughout the week. That amount seemed to work nicely. For comparisons sake, he also got about 5 whole chickens a week (sometimes turkey/salmon/white fish instead), fresh liver/organ meat, 4 bags of frozen broccoli/cauliflower/zucchini/okra/other green veg, oatmeal, a dozen or so apples or 5-6 bananas, 6 eggs. So the sardines were just part of the whole thing, not the main thing. I don't know if there'd be anything wrong with them being the main protein source, just with the amount Brogan ate and the cost (usually EUR 1 or so a tin), feeding primarily sardines would have been a fortune - not to mention really heavy to cart back from the grocery store. Not sure what the proportions would be in a raw diet but if I had been able to feed raw, I would have probably stuck them in with the veggies to make them more appealing. And you all eating them yourselves on toast is still cracking me up. I can't poo-poo them because to be honest I've never eaten them...they are likely delicious, it's just the smell that knocks me out! Whew!
They are nice. Some times I just take a tin to work for my dinner but I do have to eat them in the car park because I worry about my co worers noses. Love them and the sardines
Yummm....in tomato, then grilled on toast (with lots of butter! ) @Emily_BabbelHund you just have to come over to the UK and try some!
