I have a 9 month old yellow lab which sheds like crazy! He started shedding especially a lot in the last couple of weeks and even though I brush him daily I have to sweep the floor like 5 times a day. Is this normal? I think I've read somewhere that Labradors shed a lot when transitioning from a puppy to an adult lab but when does this usually happen and how long does it last? Also around which month do they start to shed their winter coats? Thanks in advance!
Welcome to the world of shedding! Labradors shed... TWICE a year. When the seasons change, from winter to summer, and from summer to winter. And they lose hair throughout the year as part of a normal hair cycle. I find it's manageable by rubbing Snowie down twice a day with a damp towel. I dry him after his dip in the pool and do the rub down then. But we do have a lot of hair to contend with and vacuum three times a week. I do remember though that he seemed to shed more when he was your dog's age. Maybe they shed less with age. Perhaps other forum members know more.
Don't brush, vacuum. Your floors, that is. We used to sweep and it just moves a lot of the hair around. Vacuuming is far better. We have a cordless Dyson Animal vacuum that is brilliant. It's so quick to use, far quicker than brushing. My husband uses it every morning wen I take the dogs on their walks.
I tried vacuuming his fur before but the problem is that he's afraid of the vacuum cleaner and won't stay still for one moment
I don't mean vacuum the dog (although I know Rosie vacuums Pongo!) but do the floor. If your dog is scared of that, just fed him treats whilst you do it. I've done this with Willow, and now, instead of being afraid of the vacuum, she follows it around looking for biscuits.
Stanley watches you with interest when you're hoovering. I think he's thinking "that's right, peasant. You clear my mess up!".
Holly sheds all year round. The peak shedding season is spring and autumn, but it never completely stops. We just accept having hair on our clothes and floors as part of owning a Labrador At this time of year we know that stroking Holly will produce a pile of hair. We give her a brush every few days (outdoors when weather permits) to get as much out as possible, and hoover once a day.
Bailey sheds a lot too, we brush him once a day and vacuum every other day - Bailey is not keen on the hoover but like @snowbunny we treat while the hoover is going, and he is getting better. Hoovering however is better than sweeping, mainly because Bailey likes to help the brush by attacking it and saving mummy from its plans to rule the world!
A leather couch, good vacuum, and a Paws Pamper Undercoat Rake =winning combination Or at least keeps the shedding to a minimum, lol!
Labs shed 2x per year, but each time lasts 6 months. Cooper does not like (really does not like) being brushed, so it is even worse with her than Tilly. Try naming the dust bunnies. I'm always surprised where the air currents in the house make them accumulate. Maybe I should build a rabbit hutch for the bunnies.
Yellow labs are an exception. He sheds all the time. I just finished brushing him got lots of hair. If i just pinch his fur a little bit more comes off.
I have found with my black dogs that the shedding is usually twice a year, for a month or so each time. BUT, the time of the shed varies and sometimes it's heavier than other times. Jet only seemed to shed once one year. Jet had more undercoat and nearly always shed more than Oban.

OMG I had one of those in my bra the other day - had to go to the ladies while at work and fish is out but oh the relief!
Last week I was at the vet for an inflammation in the left ear of Finn. We also happened to talk about shedding, for Finn looses hair all year round but now it has become worse. She told me the best way to get rid of the loose hair to go to the trimmer and let them wash them thoroughly. That is how they will loose the hair quickly and without too much hair in the house..
