Hey guys, somehow a skunk managed to get into my garden and made a complete havoc out of it. My dog who was laying down on the porch saw the skunk and started chasing it all over the garden. It's a good thing I thought about closing all the doors and windows. In the midst of the chase, my dog got sprayed. We finally got rid of the skunk by calling a wildlife removal service. The problem is my dog smells really bad. What do I do to get rid of the smell? Any thoughts on this would be great.

Tomato ketchup is supposed to work on fox poo, but I'm not sure about skunk spray!

What about asking the wildlife rescue people, I imagine it's something they have to deal with. Umm yeah, hope you can get it sorted, fox poo is bad enough!

    To de-skunk your dog:

    Mix-
    1quart peroxide
    1/4 cup baking soda
    1 tablespoon Dawn

You may need to wash a couple of times. It works. Tomato juice doesn't.

I hear the solution above from @pup-pup works, from those who have used it. A feminine hygiene douche product (look up the recipe) apparently also works as it has the right enzymes. Just like completely eliminating pee smell from an accident spot skunk also required an enzymatic cleanser, only a stonger one. I keep Skunk Off on hand. https://www.drugs.com/vet/skunk-off-can.html

LOL, tomato juice does help a bit but you need massive amounts of it and you have to lather as much as you can, rinse, repeat over and over again. It took about 20 quart sized bottles for our ESS. It was the only thing we could buy at stores still open that hour of night. AND our mostly white dog did definitely turn a light pink colour.

ETA: Should have mentionned, check the face. A direct skunk hit from close up in the eyes can blind, I've read. Dog would likely be frantically scratching face.

This happened to my cousin's dog in our backyard last summer - vet clinics have a wash that you can buy. Our neighbour is a vet and she said that the tomato juice thing is basically a myth and to go with the wash (though it took WEEKS for the smell to go away fully - she is a bull mastiff and got sprayed in the face so in all the wrinkled bits).

I've used the a hydrogen peroxide mix several times and it worked well without any side effects. Kept it away from eyes and mouth and rinsed very well.

Do not be at all surprised that the next time it rains and your dog gets wet you might catch a faint wiff of skunk. Years ago our Dobe got nailed right in the face, it was a year before that faint odor went away.

Tomato juice does sort of work, but you really have to use a lot, like several big #10 cans full. Let's put it this way, TJ will get the dog to the point where you can get in the car and go to the vet's without your eyes watering.
