I took Sam and Nell to the woods this morning , Sam off lead straight away as usual but Nell on her lead, she met a few dogs, one barked at her so she barked back, fair enough , but there was no reactive signs from her . With a little trepidation , I dropped the end of her lead on the way back to the car, its a safe place to try this , she just bumbled along, sniffing hither and thither , then fear took over and I picked it up again ! Its always a big deal , with a rehomed dog, when to allow some freedom , but I prefer to take baby steps and just drop the end of the lead for a few minutes each day . What is good is that she watches Sam all the time when we`re out , which is great . No Diva Princess here , I love to see her with bits of leaves stuck on her coat and mucky feet ! x
Really good progress! I remember the first time we let Casper off the lead...he just took off! He came back, eventually after a maahooosive hoolie
Oh the foolishness of youth! I rehomed a German Pointer (very nervous dog, had never been out of kennels or socialised) at 13 months old. The first day I took him to the top of my hills with my other two GSPs and let him off and German Pointers range at quite a distance! I decided that he would want to be with me rather than on his own and kept changing directions! I was his security. I wouldn't do it now though. I loved him dearly, he had a terrible start in life and unfortunately died of epilepsy aged just 8 years old, he was a gentleman x
Fantastic Kate, good girl Nelly. I remember when we plucked up the courage to let Charlie off lead for the first time, errr ….. we saw him disappear into a dot on the horizon and returned about an hour later x
Allowing freedom on walks is always a heart in mouth moment . Good to hear that Nell's first taste went by without her even noticing . What's her recall like Kate?
Its not bad at all thanks , she adores the tiny fish4dogs freeze dried treats , so am currently calling her and she gets a treat , I don't think she is a runner , she seems content to meander along at my side , at the moment ! x
