So pleased the day went well. And that you know what you're dealing with. I'm sure the pain relief will make Sky feel much better. Omega 3s are also good for inflammation. I give Snowie salmon oil capsules every day.
Thank you MF. We give Sky Yumove tablets and a bit of salmon oil in her food daily. Yes it's good to have a plan of action in place for her.
Just a thought - maybe it's her pain that is putting Sky off Red. Pain relief may help with this as a side effect. Fingers crossed for Sky.
Glad to hear that Sky's safely through the X-rays. My last dog had arthritis, though not till 13, and did really well on daily Metacam. I hope Sky soon feels more comfortable and things generally start to improve.
Glad to hear you now have a plan to make Sky feel more comfortable. Once her aches and pains are under control she might appreciate Red's company more, although she might not feel like energetic play! I hope things settle down and continue to progress well.
Yes edzbird, I don't think it has helped. She seemed brighter after a rest last evening and we had both dogs together (although have to keep lead on Red). The vet said she might be better on a liquid painkiller (don't know what it is called) which they gave her yesterday after her x rays, rather than the Previcox she is on. I will ask for this when the Previcox is finished.
Yes I am hoping she will become more accepting of Red. Red did go and lick Sky last evening and Sky seemed more tolerant than she has been - i.e. she stayed put as oppposed to her usual moving out of Red's way
Monty was put on previcox for a month or so and I don't think it helped much. Then he was moved onto metacam, the liquid one, there are also cheaper generic brands which are the same drug, and we saw a big improvement. Hope this helps Syke. Plus I think it's easier to administer.
Previcox didn't help Doug much in the end we used onsior and tramadol. This combination kept Doug pain free and I think extended his life.
Tramadol made Belle's legs go from underneath her. It took 2 or 3 doses before I made the connection and she couldn't have metacam due to kidney disease. Fingers crossed you home in on an effective, long term pain killer soon.
Casper was diagnosed with AS (ankylosing spondylosis) basically arthritis of the back, plus mild HD in one hip. Our vet recommended a multi modal approach 1. Gentle exercise 2. Yumove Advance and keepng his weight on the light side of ideal. He was put on a course of Onisor running parallel for 6 weeks, as it takes that long for the Yumove to take effect. After 6 weeks he was reviewed, and had actually improved, so came off the Onisor, but we have it for when he has overdone on a long walk. He is 8 now, and is much fitter than when we got him at 5 years old. Last year, when we got the puppy, although he was affectionate, did not tolerate her anywhere near his back legs, because she is clumsy and accidentally caught him the wrong way a couple of times. He also on a single protein, high quality diet, plus daily salmon oil on his food as a supplement.
Yep. Exactly this. Give all the supplements, cartrophen, etc that you like (or can afford) - by all means, it can't hurt (and I do this). But get the excess weight off them and that's where you'll find the most dramatic improvement. And it's free.
We just got another half a kilo off..... almost there. Annual check up on Saturday so will confirm if he is now slinky enough!
Not when the world and his wife want to constantly feed him. Some days his breakfast and dinners are pitiful.
I know! Betsy, my younger dog, needs to get a kg off - the amount of kibble in her bowl looks pathetic. But, that's all she needs. So that's that. It doesn't help that Charlie is underweight and is getting extra. I've found very inventive games for her with two bits of extra kibble to keep her occupied until he's finished stuffing his face with his huge dinner plus extra salmon oil!
I flip between making 70 grams of kibble last 20 minutes, shared out between various treat dispensers, puzzle toys etc, but then sometimes think that's really mean and let him gobble it down in 10 seconds flat. If I had two I would never kept track of who was getting what food and when. Sorry @Atemas have taken your post off on a tangent here, hope Skye is doing OK.
That's Betsy's entire daily allowance at the minute! I use it for training. I have been known to saw kibble into quarters....
