Thor has always had some sleep in his eyes from time to time, but the last week or so it has been building up more and more and even gathering throughout the day. Sunday morning it was definately a green colour but since then it has just been like normal sleep. There wasnt much there at all this morning. Is it worth a trip to the vets? Or is it worth me trying some eye stuff i can get myself first to see if that clears it up? Can anyone recommend anything that might help? It doesnt seem to be bothering him, and he isnt messing with his eyes at all.
It tends to mostly gather in only one of his eyes by the way, not sure if that makes any difference. His left eye gets barely any sleep in it.
Hi there , I'd definately book an appointment at the vets.Its been going on for a while and it doesn't sound a very pretty colour! Dexter has had similar when he was younger and it was conjunctivitis ,he didn't scratch or worry his eyes at either. You can use precautionary drops if you live in a dry,dusty environment after his eyes have cleared up with your vet prescription .If it's been windy where we live ,it can be very dusty so I pop a few drops of tears au naturelle in Dexter's eyes to give them an extra bit of lubricstion,dry eyes can cause irritations and create discharge
Yup, my three have all had conjunctivitis meaning they needed medicated drops. Or, it could be seasonal allergies - pine tree pollen really affects Willow. Luckily, we avoid it now, despite being surrounded by pine trees, because pollen season hasn't started in Andorra, that we've just left, but is over in Spain, where we are now It's worth getting some sterile saline drops, too, to flush out his eyes a couple of times a day.
Hi Aimee, Plum has had non-stop eye trouble over the last few months (she's 7 months) and I've had probably 5 trips to the vet and been prescribed various eye drops/gels. Currently she is having Celuvisc 1% in her eyes, one drop each eye, morning and night and I have to do this for TWO MONTHS ! It's a human medicine for dry eye, meant to lubricate the eye (the vet has prescribed this coz she thinks Plum's eye problems are allergy related). She still has gammy eyes every morning, however. Prob not best to get some without vet advice? Initially I boiled water and let it cool and dissolved a bit of salt in the water then gently wiped her eyes with the water/salt solution on cotton wool. But it didn't help enough hence the first vet visit. I have also read that used tea bags can be soothing and helpful but again, this helped a bit but not enough. But you could try both of these and see how you go? Green in colour usually suggests an infection of some kind and gel/drops would most likely be prescribed. But if it's clear now and like normal sleep I wouldn't necessarily go to the vet unless it built up again and turned yellow/green. I have found putting drops in Plum's eyes has been one of the greatest challenges! I don't know how much really gets in her eyes and how much rolls down her face so I'm not surprised the problem has continued. Sorry for a long reply, without much helpful to say! Hope Thor's eyes remain clear.
Quinn has had conjunctivitis several times, but also sand/dust tend to bother her eyes for several days. With eye infection, she usually has more green goop and her eyes are sometimes sealed shut in the morning. With irritation, it can build during the day but is less so, and easy to wipe away and a clear/white colour. I have drops on hand from previous vet visits and use those for suspected infection and it clears up after 1-2 days of drops. If not, we go back to the vet. For irritation, I hold a warm cloth over her eyes and wipe away any build up.
My suspicion if it's just one eye is that it is an irritation in the one eye rather than an allergy. I'd think allergies would affect both eyes? When Snowie had a weepy eye, I called the vet and he said to first flush it out with saline. He recommended boiling water, then adding 0.5 tsp salt per cup of water, and allow to cool. Then flush the eye out thoroughly. If no immediate improvement, then come in straight to the vet. In Snowie's case, he had a grazed cornea from rough play with another dog, which required antibiotic gel. He also had his eye sewn shut (we were in a rural area) -- our normal vet said she wouldn't have done this, would've rather left the eye open to monitor it. It healed thankfully. I wouldn't mess with eyes. If you suspect an infection or a foreign body in the eye, you need to see a vet.
I am paranoid about eyes ! Millie had what looked like an infection but turned out to be a Melting Ulcer which required immediate surgery at an eye hospital , please see a Vet, its not worth not doing x
Yes, my Callum had this - he nearly lost his sight and the insurance for his op was £7000. Not to scare you, but it's always worth a vet visit where eyes are the worry xx ..
I'm with @kateincornwall and @Boogie on this one. My Alice also had a melting ulcer which needed a corneal graft to save the eye. Ever since then I have been paranoid about eyes and I'm off to the vets whenever the dogs have something wrong with their eyes. I never use left over drops from previous treatments. Eye drops don't tend to keep for very long once the bottle has been opened plus some conditions can be made worse by the wrong eye drops or ointments.
It was actually cos of what I read here about eyes that I even mentioned Snowie's eye to vet - I was calling cos he was crying and I thought it was his bad back after rough play. I mentioned the eye as an aside cos the posts here were in my head and luckily the vet was smart and realized something was amiss. Thank goodness! Snowie was crying cos of his eye; there was nothing wrong with his back.
We are very paranoid about eyes in our house and consult and treat quickly. It's saves a lot of stress for the dog and worry for you.
Tilly has drooping lower lids (think blood hound) and often had matter in her eyes. We would wipe it out and occasionally treat it with meds from the vet, but it did not seem to make much difference. About a year ago, we noticed that the skin folds under her chin were hard and irritated. We took her to our vet who said it was a bacterial infection and gave us Nystatin Neomycin Triamcinolone Ointment to rub on the folds once or twice a day. It cleared up the infection, but to everyone's surprise it also cleared up the mattering in her eyes. She has had almost no matter in her eyes since treating her with the ointment. We have not had to treat her chin but a couple of times (each time for about a week). If the matter returns we treat her chin and it goes away. Our vet doesn't know why it works, but it does.
