Hey guys As you were all so helpful and friendly before We think Cody has munched something. His stools were loose yesterday - he had an accident over night which was pure diarrhea and he has only been squirting watery stuff today. Normally very solid on his diet. We haven't fed him (assume this will cause the waterness) but stayed home from work to monitor him. He hasn't eaten for 24 hours. We have just fed him chicken and rice (as bland as possible). He is quite chipper, greeted me when I came in and is up for cuddles. He hasn't really been interested in his toys but we have taken him for 2 mini walks today to get him out the house. He is grabbing for grass - though not being sick. That said he will eat grass/dandilions if he can anyway. We have been watching him like a hawk. We had wanted to worm him this weekend - the vet lady told me last time I intended to worm him not to and to wait a month since we had him. Stuck now as we don't know how much of it he will absorb. Any advice or when we should be able to worm him. Quite concerned about him.
Was he eager to eat the chicken and rice? If you're very concerned do consult your vet. It could be that he has scavenged something which could potentially cause a blockage, so continue to monitor him closely, as you obviously have done so far.
I'd phone your vet and ask for advice. Have you checked him for worms? Does he actually have any? I realize now might not be the easiest time to pick up a stool sample and have it tested!!
Hiya He wolfed it down then an hour later when he went out he wanted to play and went loopy in the garden. We have been trying to source pumpkin 100% canned but its so hard to get in the UK,

Usually you won't see worms yourself even if there are any. You need to have the vet do a floatation test (I think that's what it's called) to see if there are any eggs. Well, this is what I'm told. Altho we did see the tapeworm eggs around our dog's anus and on his poo - but they wriggle away very, very fast, you have to be quick!; vet test confirmed it. But for the other types of worms, not sure if you can see them with the naked eye.
Quinn was vomiting/had some diarrhea around her 1 year check up (possibly ate something, possibly a bug) and the vet told us not to worm her (also would not give her any shots) until she was feeling better. I wouldn't give any wormer until his tummy settled and call the vet to ask their advice for sure.
I wouldn't work him until his tummy is settled. Feed him several small portions of chicken and rice throughout the day. If the diorrhea continues I would pop to the vet and get them to check him. They may prescribe prokolin which is amazing stuff. Hope he gets better soon.
You can only see tapeworms and roundworms, and not their eggs. Other worms you'd need a microscope. As per my Vet here in Canada after a bout of roundworms. Yup, I wouldn't worm either till this is under control. Can you find sweet potato? Baked it has far more fibre than pumpkin. More sugar too but you need less of it so the sugar is not a concern. In fact I think if you only give one sixth the amount you would for pumpkin (which would mean equal amounts of fibre) then if I remember correctly it ends up being less sugar. But, introducing fibre can go opposite the way you want, more and looser poop. My Vet has ok'd Imodium, Peptobismal and Kaopectate. Depending where you are the names might be different, I'm in Canada. Sorry, I once found a chart with comparisons that did say 6 x the fibre in Sweet potato and now I can't find it. Please check it out.
Hi Guys Thank you for this. We have been back to the vets today. Chicken and Rice, Antibiotics and probiotics. Changing his food and phasing that in when off the chicken and rice as this seems like the most logical time to do it Vet wasn't overly concerned. Mesh muzzle also on order to stop him picking stuff up in the garden and on walks
Me again! Does any one use the sweet potato mentioned above to firm their pooch up? We have now finished the anitbiotics and probiotics and have transferred onto James Wellbeloved dry complete food after a week of chicken and rice (then a chicken rice and JWB mix). We still have loose stools though no where near as bad and he is now regular - it is just completely different. Prior to this episode he had firm (sometimes too firm perhaps/chalky on the wet food) small manageable poops. Now we have large wet loose ones. Any one any experience of adding extra fibre to the diet to resolve this sort of problem?
Stanley was on JWB when he was a puppy and his poos we're always runny. We changed to canagan chicken and sweet potato food and his poos are pretty much always solid now. If he has a bad tummy I usually give him chicken and sweet potato rather than rice because that's what he's used to and it settles it back down
thank you. The vet recommended we put him on this food so i'm hoping it suits him. I guess its just about monitoring it and seeing how we go.
I have used mashed sweet potato added to Plum's kibble plus Protexin (fibre pellets - a spoonful on breakfast kibble) because there was a period of time when she had regular loose stools. I don't know whether her constitution has just matured but it has been loads better since using these two things. I haven't used sweet potato for about 10 days now nor the Protexin, and she's been fine, and had been fine for some time, prior to me stopping. I have half a tub of Protexin left and a sweet potato in the cupboard just in case!
