Lol, often people coming out from under anesthetic are more "chatty" than normal. DH is the dark, handsome and silent type so I was hoping...:)

Harls didn't have a laparoscopic, unfortunately it isn't available at any of the vets in our town and it was very important for me that our vet work with her because I trust him and his partners incredibly, we have had a nine year relationship with them, but she only had her ovaries removed so it was still less physically traumatic than a full hysterectomy.

That's great news! Sorry you had such a sad day at work, but glad that the vet is so pleased with Harley!

I just want to say that I would consider carefully before having Harley's hips re-xrayed. There really wont be that much necessity. They are ok now, and so unless there is a problem I wouldnt bother. The procedure itself does carry a slight risk.

A rant from my side...I just want to say thank you to everyone for their support and messages. We have had support from our puppy group too and it really means a lot to me. My rant however is how miffed (polited word used) I am at our family. We have told everyone that Harley was going in and although we aren't active social media people, so there aren't posts on FB or anything, not one family member has even remembered much less asked. Yet, when their kids so much as burp there are basically confetti cannons. It isn't fair, our animals are immensely important to us and fill the children role for us, I think it is just decency to ask how she is. This was a really stressful and big deal for us.

Thanks Karen, our vet also felt that unless we had concerns it shouldn't be a default.

Hooray for Harley! Glad she's back & recovering - that period while they are away is horrible. Great that her bloods and xrays were normal too. I am paranoid about kidney function since we lost Belle - we've never done routine bloods - it could have given us an early heads-up on her condition & we could have adjusted her diet. I am going to ask about this when Coco goes for his boosters this year.

Too bad your family weren't a bit more thoughtful, but as the saying goes - "we can choose our friends but..."

I feel your pain. I had a "conversation" with a very close friend of mine recently about just this. When you listen to - and suitably comment on - their stories of "amazing thing my child did today" over the years, but they don't say a single thing about your new puppy or even "like" any pictures, videos or comments you make about her. Hmmm, that's not on.

So pleased that all has gone smoothly for your dear girl x I`m afraid I have relatives who aren't dog friendly , never ask about Sam despite his diagnosis and just generally appear uncaring . I find that the best way to deal with it, is to pity them for missing out on the love of dogs xx

My girl Cali (1yr) had a lap spay yesterday. The procedure couldn't have gone better. We are so thankful. Boy, when we brought her home, she couldn't find a comfortable position to lie in; it was so distressing because she obviously wanted to lie down. About an hour later she managed to go to sleep on her bed which was moved to the family room. I slept in the sofa beside her. She is subdued compared to her normal self but to be expected. Ate her supper last night and breakfast this morning no problem. She is wearing an e collar which is prolly harder on me.

I want to add one comment. For all my life until we brought Cali into our family I was basically terrified of dogs. Didn't understand the bond that exists between humans and their pets. In fact, pretty much assumed pets were like toys to their owners. My siblings have pets but that didn't help. It's possible that there are other people are similarly lacking in understanding and the reason why they might fail to check in.

Oh your sentence about burping and confetti cannons had me laughing out loud! You have a wonderful turn of phrase.

I have to admit that I'm probably guilty of what you describe a bit.
I have a friend who, in the past, has waxed lyrical about her love for her dogs and I've been a bit dismissive (not to her, just in my head) but I understand it much more now and I have to admit, I talk far more about my pup than I ever did/do about my son! I've hardly ever shared a pic of my son or even taken that many but it's the opposite with Plum!

I guess it's just about friends/family recognising and being sensitive to what's important to you even if they don't share the same feelings about pets.

My friend jokingly told me to stop sending her snapchats of Stanley - so I said I would but I didn't want to see any of her baby.

I never seen anyone's face drop so suddenly :D

Coming back to spaying for a moment. :) Lady looked really rough when we picked her up from the vet, however, 2 hours later she ate a tennis ball so we figured she was feeling better. (Manic rush to the very expensive out-of-hours vet for x-rays etc followed by next day poop inspection to make sure the bits came through ).

After that she was pretty much back to normal. :D

Hehehe, I can empathize with not getting the dog owner experience fully when we had cats and my friends spoke about their dogs. And I love all the kids in our family very much. I think yesterday was just a rough day for me overall and I was emotionally drained when I got home and my phone rang, seeing it was a family member I thought they may be checking in about Harls but it was really just a monologue about their day and I was truly happy for them they were having such a happy one and I need to realise that I work with people who are very sensitive to people's well being all day long and my husband is very tuned into me too, so I can't be disappointed when family don't get or ask how a day was.
That is what is great about this forum. I can come and just browse, laugh, cry and post with everyone over a similar topic that we all love, but I can do it at my own speed. Introvert heaven:)

Glad Harley's spay went well. Hope she doesn't get too energetic over the next few days!
I understand what you say about family not asking about your dog, mine were the same, but after I pointed out how often I called to check on them / their child etc that they didn't do the same for me. Nrelationships are two way and I am glad I stated that to my family as things have got so much better.

It's good to hear that all's gone well for Harley and that she had such a glowing report from the vet too. I hope her recovery continues to go well, without her being too much of a bouncy lab! Keep up the Kongs!

I am really amazed at how well she has recovered. This evening and night she has eaten food and tried to initiate all sorts of games, including tug. We distracted her with other, more suitable games but she is happy and, yes, bouncy.

A report on official life after the spay. Well, I have to say it is just like life before the spay:) By about 48 hrs after the operation, Harley was really starting to return to her full life self. Her appetite is unaffected, she is happy and bouncy and wants to play all the time. Just like before the operation. We have been keeping a close eye on the wound, she will happily lay on her back and have the world look at her stomach. It is clean and non-irritated.
@CherryBiscuit we are thinking of you for tomorrow! Best of luck.
