Hello, my 13.1/2 year old Labrador Doris pants excessively. I has been going on for a few months I have taken her to the vets and they can not find any medical reason for it. It has got worse the last few days and I just don't know what to do. Please any ideas.
It sounds as if she could be in pain? Take her back to the vet again and ask for another examination. Is her heart OK?
I would get them to check for pain, heart problems and laringeal paralysis . My oldest dog would pant heavily when he was in pain, he also had LP which would also make him pant. My middle dog has a grade 1 heart murmur which can make her pant if she's been rushing around. I would get a second opinion, I had to take my dog to a more specialised vet who with the help of a physio and scan results were able to come up with a plan to treat him.
Agree absolutely, if you think there is something wrong, and she is panting, you are probably right. A visit to the vet for a second opinion is what I would do in this situation.
I agree with going back to the vet! Our Euan used to pant excessively too. The last two years of his life he was in pain. We didn't know if the panting was of medication he was getting for his leaking of pee. He had enurase, which had a side effect of excessive panting. Our vet couldn't tell either! Is she on any medication?
Hi, no as they coudnt find anything wrong with her. Just felt maybe it was attention getting or a habit she had got into. Anyway I'm going to the vets this morning as she is fairly distressed this morning and hasent stopped, Will elt you know how we go on. Caroline.
Ok been to the vets, vet has decided she may have a bit of arthritis in her hips so may be causing her discomfort, so it may cause the panting. Have got some loxicom so will see how it goes. Not totally convinced but have to believe in the vet. At this moment Doris is fast asleep and peaceful, think the trip has worn her out. xx
You're doing everything you can. Just try the meds and if they don't help go back. It's so hard sometimes to get to the bottom if whats going on . It can be so frustrating
No, I thought that an unusual comment, but tbh don't have much experience (luckily) of dogs in acute pain.
Doug's used to pant when his pain increased or changed. It's very different to a normal pant. I hated the sound it always ment trouble. It's very distinctive. When it started it i would find it hard to be calm because i knew Doug was struggling. He only did it when he was in pain
My Barney (passed over to Rainbow Bridge last January) used to pant excessively. I took him to the vets who did a scan and discovered he had cardio myopathy. He did well with the heart failure for 2 years on medication, bouncy as anything, you wouldn't have known anything was wrong! Then his kidneys failed and it was best to let him go. Hope you get to the bottom of the problem with your lab x
I am so sorry to hear this. I know first hand how difficult it is to hear the panting. My 12 year old lab, daisy, ants, but we found out it was due to an adrenal tumor, causing her many other medical problems. This tumor causes a release of cortisol so it causes her high stress levels, and over excursion We are trying to decide between surgery or no. We went to two vet internists who did multiple good tests along with a cat scan and ultrasound. I hope it is just due to pain and the medication should help her. Tilly also pants more than she used to. She doesn't pant when she is quiet, but does a bit when she is, or has been, moving around much. Vet does not see anything wrong, and she does not seem to be uncomfortable. She doesn't run anymore, but she can walk faster than I do, and will trot occasionally. She still loves to wade and swim, and will play bitey face with Cooper.
