Was really sad at the woods a couple of days ago. We arrived to find an elderly man trying to entice his youngish black lab bitch out of the undergrowth near the carpark at the end of the walk. I have met him before. This was when he had her on a long rope and he said to me "I have to have her on a rope otherwise she will disappear into the bushes and not come to the car". My thought, like you guys probably, went along the lines of what the heck is going on that she doesn't want to go with him...... The other day there were several people helping him, and a few more that we joined on a walk. They told me he was around 90 years old (remarkably well looking on it I must say) and that he was an old army Major, having spent a lot of time in Africa. And he hit his dog with a stick to make it behave. He asked one of the walkers I was with if her husband would train her for him (in spite of the husband not training their own dogs, it was the wife I was with who did it all). On this occasion it took almost 2 hours and numerous people trying to catch the dog and leash it. I was passing with Lilly and Sophie as another chap was trying to help almost "dragging" the poor thing to the car. She slipped her collar and so I popped Lilly's slip lead on before she did a runner again. I felt heartfelt sorry for the beautiful dog and almost guilty for my part. Though to be honest I was helping the Good Samaritan that was helping the old guy, the GS being covered in blood and scratches from being in among the brambles catching her. Just wanted to take the girl home with me Immensely sad.
So awful.... The total lack of empathy you see in some people for other living things... If he's open to training ideas I wonder if it might be worth demonstrating some positive methods for him with Lilly?

Not witnessed it. All heresay. I think his age and status in Community is a barrier to others Have tried this before with another chap in our own village. Older guy. Should have saved my breath. At least he "only" used a rolled up newspaper on the snout His punishing behaviour was more subtle.......
Seeing acts of cruelty or knowing they are happening is so heart wrenching. I'll never forget the times I've seen it, it always shocks me how people can be so cruel to such loving creatures.
Three things if you beat them better be a woman, a dog and a walnut tree. As the saying goes. It's been a round a long time and is in grained. I do what i can but its hard and dangerous. My friend and seized and dog and wouldn't let it go until the police who we called arrived. We saved that young dogs life that day it was so hypothermic after been repeatly thrown into a canal by its "owner " trying to impress his girlfriend. I had to get it a shove it up my jumper in order to stop it going into shock it was so cold. No living thing deserves to live in fear.
Luckily we were together shes and ex police officer and the attending officer was her husband. We would never dared on our own
Omg that's awful! Unfortunately I too have witnessed two awful events and I'll never forget them I may only be a small slim girl but boy did I shout abuse at this old man for beating his dog! No wonder his dog tried to come with me (his dog literally ran across the field to me but the man stayed far away) when the dog eventually went back I saw him grab the poor rottie X by its neck and smack it ! I was absolutely fuming. I tried chasing after him to get a photo but he disappeared in the woods. Fair to say my poor mom had to calm me down after that day. If only the dog got free and ran back to me I'd have held on and called the police Yet again another rottie owner hitting her dog with a leash but as i didnt get "proof" nothing could be done! I'd never dream of hitting a dog! But boy did I want to hit those stupid idiot "owners"
Have just returned from our walk, we met an owner with a beautiful on lead collie. Was on a very short lead but reacted to us on the other side of the road. I said good morning and walked Finn past them, then heard a big 'thwack', could only have been the owner hitting the dog with his leather lead. It has spoilt my morning and it won't help the poor dog either, so sad.
Makes me weep , the cruelty of owners to their dogs . I feel sad even if I hear someone yelling at their dog , but these incidents are truly awful , poor dogs
Oh Jac so sorry you were there to witness that poor dogs terrified state x I'm afraid I take no prisoners when I see cruelty. I stepped in between a man and his two dogs a few months ago, he was going to hit them for not "recalling" but instead I treated/praised them for coming back and told him there was no point in punishing a dog he hadn't trained. On the other side of the coin I have quietly over months demonstrated to an older man how nice positive training can help his dog and he seems softer now and his dog doesn't go for Hattie any more xx I prefer dogs to humans because some humans don't deserve dogs. xx
