6 Month - Hip Dysplasia? Video w/ Walking

I'm glad I can now laugh at her wiggle walk without feeling guilty!

 

We've just found out that one of Prims siblings has been diagnosed with hip dysplasia. At this stage, I'm not concenered about her too much as she isnt displaying any symtoms, at least as fair as Im aware, but if it is in the gene pool I am wondering whether we should take her to the vets to be checked over anyway? Or should we just be vigilant?

She has a good butt wiggle that i term the 'pre-poo' walk, definitely not as 'sexy' as Kieras wiggle!!

 

If it would put your mind at rest , then take her along to the Vet for a check . Although an X ray or scan is the only definite way to diagnose hip problems , a Vet can often tell if issues are likely to be present just by examining the hips, by gentle manipulation . I was worried about my boy, now almost six years old , as he often did bunny hops , but our Vet put my mind at rest . Then, when he has unrelated surgery last year , he had a chest Xray and I asked the Vet to do his hips whilst he was sedated for his surgery , they are just fine , as he suspected . Often, its just sheer bad luck when HD pops up in a litter , and whilst hip scores of both parents are a good indicator , they aren't a cast iron guarantee that no pups from the litter will be free of HD or elbows either . I wouldn't worry too much unless he is showing real signs x

 

I know this won't stop new puppy owners worrying, and I'll worry as much with the next pup. Or just maybe I'll be able to relax a bit more....

Both of my dogs have perfect hips - but with both of them I have been convinced (before they were x-rayed) that they had hip dysplasia.

I watched them like a hawk - I noted every sloppy sit, every swaying walk, every bunny hop, each mis-step and every not-quite-stood-evenly - 'O god, she kept her back legs together going up those steps' I would think 'she is definitely bunny hopping there!'. Betsy swings her right leg out when she has a wee 'surely a sign something is wrong' I would think....I have worried about her swinging her right leg out to wee since she was 8 weeks old until she was x-rayed 2 weeks ago.

Yup me too! I was convinced that something was wrong with Bramble, she grew tall and leggy very quickly, but the rest of her seemed to be at odds physically. She swayed and seemed to through her legs out when she walked, looked very strange to me. I was so worried I took her to the vet at around 9/10months if I remember rightly. They didn't Xray her hips, wanting to wait until she was older. They on examination, couldn't anything wrong with her joints. She is very flexible with a good range of movement, suggesting a good fit to the ball and socket joint. Even so, we were given strict advice on diet and exercise, as whilst genetics play a huge part in HD, so does their environment and diet.

 

Hi Everyone. I wanted to provide an update on Kiera. She is now 10 months old, and we just took her to the vet this morning for x-rays because we felt her symptoms were getting worse since her check up at 6 months. I was never entirely happy with the first vet visit and their response to our concerns... so we went to another office with an orthopedic specialist.

So she does has hip dysplasia according to her x-rays. The vet was pretty sure she had it just from a general examination of her hips and seeing the discomfort when checking her range of motion. We were given 3 options: anti-inflammatory and modified exercise, FHO surgery ($4500/ea), and full hip replacement surgery($7-9k/ea). We are going to go with anti-inflammatory medicine for now to see how she responds, because the surgeries are just so ridiculously expensive...

Hopefully the medicine will be enough to alleviate any pain for her. We have always been very careful with her weight, keeping her healthy and lean. We will just need to moderate her exercise a bit more.

 

Hi there, my boy has Eblow Dysplasia he was diagnosed at 7 months, we never had surgery we went for anti inflammatory tablets for a while and restricted exercise, now he is just on Synoquin tablets, he will be 4 in FEB and touch wood he is good, he seems to know that he can't run around like a lunatic, he can run but it's his own choice but most of the time he ambles near us, he can't really run after balls but that's not a problem, and he can't go on really long walks it seems 1 hr and that is his lot, and 2 more smaller walks that day.

 

Our little rescue girl has a Luxating Patella , it isn't a high grade , she had Xrays which went off to a specialist for his opinion . He agreed with our Vet that a conservative approach should be taken before diving in with surgery .She is on a low dose of metacam plus a glucosamine with chondroitin supplement daily , with restricted exercise for the first few weeks following diagnosis . Touch wood , her knee joint is being more better supported ,now that her muscles are improving , so much so that we have been able to reduce the dose of metacam . I have slowly upped the exercise and so far, so good !

 

Thank you for updating. Sorry to hear you got bad news. How is your girl doing now? Have you had to take any different approaches? My puppy is 5 months old. We're waiting to get him in at the vet, but he has been limping on his back leg. I'm convinced it is HD. I'm so worried for him.
