So we have been struggling with Merlin at night... Bit of a shock as Poppy was one of those pups who just settled down in her crate and slept straight through with never a whimper. Merly has been much more of a challenge... Most nights I get up at 1:30 or 2:00 and take him out for a pee, then he sleeps until 4:30, after which he thinks the day should start. OH thought we should just let him cry it out, but I simply cannot do that, so for the last few nights I've been getting up when he cried and just telling him to go to sleep... It's been tough, but I think we may be getting there, as last night he slept through until 06:30!!! I feel WONDERFUL... Sleep deprivation is a horrible thing!
Hurrah! Sleeeeeeeeeep!! This is why I have a puppy pen so that they can sleep at one end and wee at the other. I'd rather clear up morning puddles than get up in the night! Their bladders very soon mature enough to hold it in, by 12-14 weeks it's only the very occasional accident. None of my pups have needed to poop in the night - thankfully!
He is in a pen, with his bed at one end and space at the other, but he has never yet peed in the pen. I will continue to get up at 2:00 (setting my alarm 15 minutes later each night), that doesn't bother me, it was the not sleeping past 4:30 that was really getting to me!
What a good lad! He's done better than Stanley. It was about 7/8 weeks until he slept through until a reasonable time. I don't think I've ever been so tired!
Rory murmured Once on the first night and that was it Doug pretty much the same, but Moo well I sure you can imagine She was a very noisy tiny pup
Good lad! It was ages until Bramble slept through the night...I think she must've been around 6 months old before we had a lie in until 6am! Benson was a dream pup, think it was around 12 weeks until we got a full nights sleep
Sleep deprivation is the worst thing ever and certainly contributed largely to my Puppy Blues so I understand what you are saying @Karen. Pleased you had a better night.
I do realize we'll have bad nights again, but this means there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel!
So pleased to hear Merlin is settling, clever pup, it is exhausting doing the night time toilet trips! Jordy is still walking between 1 and 2 and despite us keeping lights off, not talking, literally just out for wee and bed, has started to think its play time! And wide awake for half hour!! Once settled he does sleep till 6-6.30 ish, but half hour in middle of the night seems a long time!! Sure he will get there!!
Progress Karen, long may it continue Sleep deprevation is just awful as it affects your whole being. xx
Yay Merlin! I have been so lucky with both my pups. Odie took two nights before he slept through the night and Axel took one week. Makes me scared to get another at least it's temporary!
Hehe, we were up twice with Squidge last night. She still often needs a wee at around 4:30am. Sounds like you have it easy
Pssssssst... It's just after 8:00. We had a pretty good night - I set my alarm and took Merlin out for a pee at 4:00 am, so he is managing over six hours at night now. Then he slept until 6:00, when I got up, fed the dogs, took them down the garden and let them play for an hour. Now we've gone back to bed for a Saturday lie-in... I really need a pee myself, but darent get up in case they wake...
