Hi everyone. I'm new on here. I was just wondering if anyone has heard of anything similar happening to a lab. We had a chocolate lab, male. He would have been 6 in 4 weeks time. He has always been full of energy and kept quite well. About 4 weeks ago he started having a bit of sickness and diahorrea. Anyway one thing led to another and our vets sent him to a vet school who diagnosed him with multiple lymphomas. We spoke with an oncologist and decided to give him the best chance and start him on the CHOP chemotherapy protocol. He started it that day. He had the vincristine. Even that first night he was sent till quite energised and you wouldn't have thought he was poorly. From the next day though he became quite lethargic etc. We just thought he had been through and lot and it would pass. He got worse and by the following week when he was due the next chemo he was taken in, they gave him it as it was tablet form but he also had a iv fluids. Antibiotics. Antisickness drugs etc. This was on Thursday. Friday he was even worse. He came home Saturday again but went downhill fast. Panting. Restless. Pacing. Whining and yelping out as if in pain. 10 days post diagnosis we had to have our boy put to sleep. This was on Saturday night. I am struggling to deal with it was all so quick and he was fairly young.
I have just read your post with tears in my eyes. I don't really have anything to add but the fact you did everything possible for the lad. 1 would have done exactly the same in your shoes. I do hope you stay around, we have such lovely members who I hope in some little way can help you through this very sad time. Maybe one day you will be able to share more of your lovely lad with us.
Really sorry to hear about you boy. It sounds like you did everything you possibly could to help him. Have you asked the vets / vet about what happened and what they think?
Thankyou all so much for your kind replies. I have never been on any forums but wanted to share my story with fellow labrador lovers. It is truely heartbreaking and our house is not the same without him.
I'm so sorry that you lost your boy. What a dreadful, heartwrenching experience. I'm sure you miss him so much. What was his name?
I am deeply sorry to read about your beloved Chocolate Labrador, it all seemed to happen so quickly and not given you time to take it all on board, so you must feel in shock. I lost a dog at just 8 years of age, so that losing one at not quite 6 seems far too young. Perhaps you could ask the vets to explain it all to you so that you can understand. I feel very sad for you.
Thankyou all. His name was Murphy. He was a lovely strong chocolate labrador. It has been a lot to take in in such a short period of time. We could not have him in pain though.
I am so very sorry for the loss of your young dog Murphy , any loss is awful but a young one is tragic . My lad is also six and has a type of lymphoma , epitheliotropic T cell , which is terminal but a longer prognosis , so I can truly empathise with you . I have also vowed not to allow my Sam to suffer as you have vowed with Murphy , it is without doubt the hardest but kindest decision we have to make for our beloved dogs . Please talk about him, its a good release of emotion , as are tears , you are in my thoughts in this saddest of times x
I am very sorry for the loss of young Murphy. It's all happened so quickly, you must be struggling to take it all in. We lost our one and only Labrador, Scooby, very quickly to probable haemangisarcoma. Our beloved dogs are such a huge part of our lives, their loss is truly heartbreaking x
I am truly sorry to hear about your loss. We do really understand on this forum, as we all love and adore our dogs, so we know how you must be feeling.
I am so sorry for your loss. Just devastating losing Murphy so young and having to watch him get so sick so quickly. I hope your vet can give you the answers you need.
I am so very sorry you lost Murphy and so young, it's awful but you made the right decision for your beloved friend as hard as it was. Sleep tight Murphy xx
It's the most difficult decision we have to make even though we know it is the only one possible for our beloved dogs. My thoughts are with you x
I'm so sorry to read your Murphy's tragic story. Six years is so young, what absolute heartbreak for you!
Thankyou all so very much for your replies. I really appreciate you all taking the time to post a message back. So sorry to hear some of your stories also. They really are a big part of the family and such a heartbreak when they are no longer there. It's truely is the hardest decision we have ever had to make but it was the last thing we could do for him. We could not watch him suffer X
I am also very sorry for your loss. When I was a small child (many years ago). We had a yellow lab who just suddenly passed away aged 4. My mum just found him laying in his favourite place in her garden. This loss was devastating for us all as it was so out of the blue and he was still so young. I can empathise with how you are feeling and it's important (if you can)to remember all the special times you had together rather than the last 10 days
