    Hi everyone,

My 12 week old puppy, has over the past 3 days developed a really strange poo schedule.

He will go pretty much all day without a poo... Then get us up about 4 times between 2am and 5am!

Usually he would be almost like clockwork 4hr after eating. Then sleep through the full night.

Thanks for any help on this.

p.s. Nothing has changed in terms of diet.

What time is his last meal?

And welcome to you from Mags, Tatze and Mollie from Manchester UK :hi:

Tatze is my pet dog, a black Lab and she's four years old. Tatze means 'paw' in German.

Mollie is my fourth Guide Dog puppy, a black Lab who is eight months old.

How much exercise does he get during the day. Most dogs seem to poo after a short walk, or at least ours to. We have a fenced yard and a dog door so they can go out anytime they want, but they both normally sleep all night and have done since they were probably 4 months.

    Hi,

Thanks for taking time to reply.

He gets a fair bit of exercise. The back garden is open to him and we actively run around, chasing etc.

It seems he now just wont poo during the day!!

Night time comes and that 'constipation' turns to diarrhoea about 5 times within a few hours.

We went to the vet and they said to just see how he goes, as he seems healthy.

But I'm really lost now, and worry its a behavioural thing, or poor training :(

    Regards
    Susan

Hi @SusanFoster and welcome. I think it's safe to say it's not down to behaviour or training (unless for some reason he thinks it's bad to poo because he's been told off/shouted at). I would have another chat with the vet as it doesn't seem normal to go all day without a poo and then have diarrhoea bouts.

If he goes in the house, we don't hit him or anything. And when he goes outside we praise and give treats.

I will call the vets in the morning again! Thanks for confirming that is whats probably needed.

Any guesses on what it could be?

P.s. He is on Orijen puppy food. Which we gradually switched to over the first 2/3 weeks. Could it be that?

Anything I suggested would only be guesswork as I have no veterinary training so it is best to discuss with your vet. That said many dietary problems are related to the food either through quantity, sensitivity to one or more of the ingredients etc. Good luck at the vets and let us know how you get on

Do you tell him off? Or even get a bit grumpy?

This was my thought - if you show disapproval he may be trying to poo when you are not around?

He has never done a poo in the house. When he does a wee, we do shout "NO" - but he is fine doing a wee, he will go throughout the day.

    EDIT

The vet has said to leave it until Monday to do any tests etc. But have given some probiotics to try.

@SusanFoster please, please don't shout 'No' at the pup if he has an accident indoors just take him out and then mop up and spray the area with no fuss or bother. If he pees on doors the fault is yours not his - you gave to train to pee outdoors and shouting 'No' is not training! Ithe is entirely possible that you are creating behavioural problems shoutingetting at the pup and being angry when he presponded as the act of peeing becomes linked with your anger and can lead to him not peeing when you are around or hiding his pee.

Hi @SusanFoster I hope your pup is OK - and the probiotics help. However, if you are worried at all or your pup stops going then get back onto the vet don't wait until Monday.

As @Jojo83 has said try not to shout if an accident occurs - I used to scoop Bailey up and run for the back door (he stopped weeing when I picked him up) and then praise and treat him for weeing outside. When cleaning up with an enzyme cleaner make sure you follow the instructions - my OH didn't and funnily enough we had a wee spot until I cleaned it up!
