hi all, Our yellow lab pup Jordy is just over 12 weeks now. We have had him since 9 weeks and generally he is fantastic! Some crazy puppy stuff but no horror stories! He isn't however sleeping well!! We put him I. His crate around 10.30- 11pm and were waking regularly to take him for a wee, this got to 5am so he slept for around 6 hours. He's started this past week to be whining then howling around 12.30, then again at 3 then 4 and so on! We tried to leave him but when whines are screams and we have attached neighbours we can't long. When he hears one of us get up he is immediarely quiet, but if we don't go to him after minute or so he will start howling again. We only get him out when quiet, outside for wee and don't talk or play. Keep lights off and so on. Has anyone got any ideas, or is this still normal?? I recognise he is still very young! Thanks in advance
How did you do your crate training with your pup? We had Luna in her crate in our room for the first 5 nights, then we moved her to the kitchen. We've not had any issues. Sometimes she cries when she goes back in the crate at 3/4 am but not for long. A friend of mine suggested when she cries to put an item of your clothing in her crate so she feels closer to you? I haven't tried it myself but you never know. We are at 10 weeks and just generally only howls when she needs a no2. We still have to get up through the night and early in the morning so I know how tired you are (so annoying because she's asleep on my lap now)! Wishing I'd trained with puppy pads now x
Here is an excellent article with all you need to know about puppies and night time - http://www.thelabradorsite.com/night-waking-how-to-restore-the-peace/
We started in lounge with us there and slowly moved crate to kitchen. My husbands dressing gown is in with him! I can cope with an in night wake and an early bird so 5 am starts won't be to bad. But is frequent! I've read your other thread, is nice to know I'm not alone in feeling a bit frazzled!
All of our dogs have slept in the bedroom with us. The crate was there, until we did not need to crate them anymore. IIRC, by 12 weeks they pretty much slept all night most of the time. I think they are happier when close to the rest of their pack.
