Hi, my lovely black lab Jasper has for the last 2-3 months been lethargic, sleeping approx 18 hours with less stamina. Routine exam and blood tests all negative. My vet thinks it's normal! Jasper was my first puppy, always had mature rescue dogs before so I don't know.

Dogs sleep a lot. Go by your vets advice and try not to worry.

Tatze is four, she sleeps whenever she's not out on a walk or the pup has persuaded her to play :)

Mollie is eight months old and sleeps the afternoon away, surfaces at 5:30 for some play, then snoozes until 7:30, meal time then snoozes until bed time. Bed at 10pm, up at 7am - meal, training and walk in the morning then zzzzzzzzzzz - rinse and repeat!

Sam is almost six years old , and is happy to snooze the day away between long walks . I used to worry when he was younger , that he must have something horribly wrong , the Vet told me not to worry and be thankful ! My small dog Nell who is only two years old is more energetic , but only marginally so , she also will happily sleep as long as she had had stimulating walks x

I think it's normal too. My memory of the labs I grew up with and those I've looked after as an adult, is that they spent most of their days snoozing if not eating, walking or pottering in the garden.

Hi, thanks for all the replies. What worries me most is that he could go from hyper to this! in only a few days weeks. He has an average of 3 hours walking /day but seems less 'fit'.

That's a natural progression too , don't worry ! They are very hyper when they don't get lots of exercise , then when exercise is accelerated , they decelerate ! I also notice that my dogs are more inclined to sleep more when the weather warms up and far more ready for play when the weather isn't so good x

Know what you mean about the heat, being black Jasper soon gets tired, guess itl be a midnight walk tonight! I had a leg injury last week so he only got a couple of short walks a day and he didn't take it out on the cat or the house, this is VERY unusual. Being a ex nurse I worry something is going on that my vet has not seen.

Sam is black too , and yes, they seem to draw the heat ! If you are worried , which I can tell you are , then ask your Vet to run some bloods , just to put your mind at rest , but maybe its also because he is growing up and applying a little more sense !

Hi kateincornwall, thanks for the advice, Jasper has had routine and thyroid bloods, suppose I sound neurotic now, cos still worried but feel better each time I read the replies.

Does Jasper still show energy at times, when doing things that he normally enjoys?

    Hi,
Hi, yes he does but tires quicker and generally seems less fit.
