Marking indoors + how to get rid of wee smell outside?

Well we just moved into a new home where there were dogs living here previously. My lab just marked the door jamb in an upstairs room we're not currently using. This is his first time weeing indoors (he's 11 months). It wasn't a bathroom-type wee as he had just wee'd outside, this was more like marking. We sprayed with Simple Solution but I'm wondering if there's something we should be doing training-wise so this doesn't happen again? I wonder if he got confused and thought he was not in the house-proper as this is an unused tucked away part of the house (converted attic-type space).

Also, what's a good way to neutralise wee smell outside? Something that is safe for garden plants?

 

Outside I use bio gel (the stuff for washing clothes) one squirt diluted in a 7 litre watering can of water. I swill each wee - no smell and I have three dogs weeing on the patio

I think his marking indoors will stop once he decides it's part of his 'den' too.

Agree with Fiona.
Lilly systematically peed in every room in the house. Once. Not ever again. Once of course she was housetrained and we were introducing her to other rooms.

Thanks @Boogie and @drjs@5 I was hoping it would be a "once and done" type thing. He's been so good ever since he was a tiny pup so I guess the move just threw him.

Rory went through a phase of marking when he got to this age. Just kept an eye on him and he's got better as he's got older. He got a bit excited about his ability to scent Mark

my lab has marked 2 more times in that room in different spots I cleaned them up, moved some more items in there, and sat with him for a while in there to hopefully make it register this is part of home. He's wee-happy!

Is it leg lifting marking? I find the boys need to be trained twice, first on horizontal surfaces, then again on vertical surfaces. In your case it probably isn't helping that you have just moved into a new house. Dogs don't generalize well. REmember how you taught a SIT in one room in your house? Then in another room? Then outside? Then in a different place? Same for potty training, it's takes them a while to realize you meant DON't pee inside, instead of DON't pee in this room. Or this house. Or you friend's house. AND, is it possible the previous occupants had a dog pee inside and they didn't clean it properly? Could be.
