Saw something wonderful this morning. A blind labrador living with a deaf collie running around the field off lead and you would never guess there was anything amiss with them. The collie wears a bell on his collar so the lab can follow him, and when the lab is recalled the collie comes too. Totally inseparable apparently, and very much living life to the full. Left me with a warm and fuzzy feeling....
Re: Blind and deaf dogs Oh, that is a wonderful story Thanks Lochan, there are so many sad and horrible tales around.
Re: Blind and deaf dogs LOVE About 10 years ago we had a mostly blind dog...she did fine until her mom passed....she had a hard time adapting after that - and it wasn't but about a year later we sent her over the bridge :'(
Re: Blind and deaf dogs I'm never sure about dogs living like this and I am so soft, what happens when one of the dogs passes away :'( x
Our Riddick was born with dodgy eyes - pupils fully dilated and fixed - so he could never control how much light went into his eyes. When he was little he could see quite well, he could look at my face if I spoke to him and he didn't bump into anything unless he was going from outside to inside, and if you threw a ball over his head he could see where it went... But in bright sunlight he was very blind. His eyes got worse as he got older, and now he has cataracts so he can only see really strong contrasts. And if he sees a dark shape in a light wall he can't tell if its a closed door or an opening and we don't move furniture around. He's quite happy in his own house and garden.
My brother has a very healthy old Yorkshire Terrier, Pepsi, who is 17 years old and still able to easily walk three miles, but he is blind. He walks into things, bless him. I saw a marvellous contraption that the Supervel Noel Fitzpatrick had rigged up. Like a harness with a flexible loop in front of the dog. It looked brilliant. Like this one - .
So wonderful , the help out there today, for compromised dogs . I must admit to being more than a little apprehensive when we discovered that Nell was deaf , but in all honesty, its just about managing it . We are going away for a short break this coming weekend , so she will be strictly on lead, but in familiar territory , she can enjoy freedom .
It's like the halo blind dog system. A woman designed them for her blind dog. it's named after muffin and it's called muffins blind dog harness
