Hi folks I could do with a bit of advice please! I have a 19 month old black labrador,he's amazing.I've wanted another puppy for a while.I only work part time so I am at home a lot and walk our pooch roscoe twice a day. Today I put a deposit on a chocolate pup that we can pick and meet in a months time.we went onto champdogs as we did with the dog we have now.can any one give advice as I'm thinking of things like the new puppy can't obviously go out until he's 12 weeks.will he be OK in the garden? Also our dog is in a crate in the kichen at night,and what about the first time out on a lead.is it better to walk them separately I really appreciate your comments thankyou all Tracey x
Hi Tracey , yes he will be fine in your garden before his final shots ! I had a friend come round with her two vaccinated dogs , to play with Sam even though I also had a resident dog like you do . He will be fine in a crate with Roscoe, his own crate but near Roscoe , it will help him to settle I`m sure . Whilst the pup is small , I would walk separately , he wont need much walking to start with , so take him, then pop him in his crate whilst you walk Roscoe . Time will soon fly by until he is old enough to enjoy longer walks with you and Roscoe x
Yes. My puppy started to join our older Lab on walks at about 6 1/2 months. By then she was walking well on a loose lead so both could walk alongside each other to and from the fields.
Yes, he'll be fine in the garden so long as foxes don't frequent it. We walk ours separately so that the pup learns to walk on a loose lead. Be sure you carry him everywhere you can think of to meet every kind of person, traffic and animal before he's 12 weeks old. I'd also have door gates etc as a way to separate them as, at those ages they are very likely to over-play. Tatze was 15 months old when we got our first pup and plenty of separate time was needed. Hello and welcome. You'd definitely do best to walk them separately for a good while; your puppy will need your undivided attention and you also want him to be focussing on you, not your other dog. Also, your puppy will only be out for a few minutes at a time, and Roscoe will need proper walks. When my puppy (now 8 months) was first allowed out, I would take them all to the beach, leave the puppy in the car with a kong while I took the older dogs for 20 minutes, then brought the puppy out for about ten to fifteen minutes, swapped back to let the older dogs out again for another 20 minutes and finally had the puppy out with one or other of the older dogs, but not both, for a few more minutes. My older dogs didn't like the puppy, but would tolerate her on walks, so this was part of my plan to get them happy in her company.

Hi there and welcome! I have a five-year old dog and a four-month old puppy. We walk them together once a day, for 20-30 minutes off-lead. Then later in the day Poppy goes out for a long walk, while the puppy gets a bit of individual play/training/chilling time at home!
It depends where you are, of course. Not that anywhere is necessarily "safe" as far as theft is concerned, but the beach I walked my dogs on, I could see the car at all times, was walking very early when there was no-one much about, and could see if anyone else came into the car park. I felt it was safe.
Yes, I know, and I meant to put it in my original post, too, Stacia, that I would only do this if I were completely comfortable with my dogs' safety. This was in the UK, it was when I was in Cornwall. But it was January/February, and there weren't too many beach goers at 7am on a weekday, so I could park right up close to the sand and watch out for anyone else entering the carpark
I still walk my two separately and plan to for a while yet, Ash is 7mths. I think it's very important they don't become too reliant on each other and can learn to be confident, stable individuals. Doesn't always work of course. LOL! Lucan seems to attract dogs that like to have a pop at him, so he's definitely not the most confident, in fact quite anxious.... another reason for walking separately.
