Hi, my six month old black lab, Florence, is systematically turning my beige carpet black! Despite my poor Dyson doing its best to hoover up all the hair it is not winning the battle!

Has anyone found a vacuum cleaner (in the UK) that is up to the challenge of a black lab shedding its hair? Various websites recommend different cleaners but it would be good to have personal recommendations from fellow "hairy dog" owners.

Any advice would be gratefully received!

    Thank you

Hi there and welcome to the forum! :)

Well we gave up and ditched the carpet..replaced with wood and tiled the hallway and kitchen. They only occasionally go upstairs so relatively safe. Our stairs do have carpet, which really do suffer! We have a Dyson, about 2 years old and one of the animal range, it does the job in our small cottage..just :)

Steadily our house is being redecorated in shades of dog-mud beige. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

    Suggestions:
    1. Get a heavily patterned carpet. It covers a multitude of problems.
    2. Brush Florence regularly to reduce the amount of loose hair.
    3. Learn to live with it as the price that must be paid for all the love Florence gives.

I have considered cutting out the middle man and hoovering Holly or even shaving her. My wife disagrees.

We have the Dyson V6 Animal and it works brilliantly on wood and tiles. We don't have carpet anywhere; I don't like it and I'm not even sure you can buy it where I live :D

The handheld Dyson range are really good and quick to run around the house, far quicker than a conventional hoover. They don't pick up big stuff, though.

My house is teeny and I only really need to hoover the kitchen and front room - I just do it when I'm boiling the kettle :D

I have a very ancient Dyson animal - it's still going strong, I Hoover once a day and have to empty it every other day.

    PS -

    I love the name Florence!

Welcome to you from Mags, Tatze and Mollie from Manchester UK :hi:

Tatze is my pet dog, a black Lab and she's four years old. Tatze means 'paw' in German.

Mollie is my fourth Guide Dog puppy, a black Lab who is ten months old.

I have 2 black Labs and a beige carpet with little specs in it, we only vacuum every other day or less and I don't see hairs on the carpet. Maybe Florence will moult less as she ages, she may just be getting rid of her puppy coat. I use a little Dyson and it copes well.

I recently read on FaceBook how fabulous the Shark is. Not got one though. These were lab owners.
Previously I has a Panasonic upright which was pretty good. Then I got a Vax which was rubbish but it was a fairly basic one.
At the minute I have a Miele cylinder. It's pretty good for hard floors but has such a hard suction it has pulled my carpet up near the edges and doors. It fairly good but I would have been disappointed if I had played full price.

We used to sweep all the time, but buying the Dyson was the best thing ever. Sweeping has a tendency to move it around, whereas the handheld vacuum picks up all the hair and takes a fraction of the time :)

That's really great to hear ! ( I work for Shark as a Brand Ambassador and have done for over a year now )

All I will say on this topic is to read the customer reviews of the Shark Vacuum cleaner range .

Either have black flooring or have a yellow labrador. I should have thought of the beige carpets when I bought Tuppence because my carpets looked relatively good when Wispa became an only dog. However, now I hoover (with a Dyson!) when Tuppence's black hairs begin to show and am always horrified at how much Wispa hair I've picked up too!
