I don't know how else to word this so I'm just going to go for it! Sorry if anyone's offended! Ziggy farts. He farts lots and lots and then even more! It happens mostly when he's asleep and It smells like someone's opened the door to the sulphurous depths of Hades and something evil has escaped! Is this normal? Will he grow out of it? Please, please, please say that he will and that its just a temporary thing!
I don't have a scientific or factual answer to this other than to say that Nelly's 'flactulances' we're pretty bad when she was as young as Ziggy. She's 8 months now and they are bad but not as often. If nothing abnormal is happening out the other end or even if his poops are normal and firm I'm sure he's perfectly fine. He's adorable by the way and I wish I could turn back time to when Nelly was that small again!
Labrador ownership seems to have dulled my sensitivities. Holly gets windy too, usually after she's eaten something revolting on a walk. Evenings can get very fragrant. Maybe you need to see if Ziggy is eating anything that makes him windy. Maybe a change of food would help, or perhaps he's found something illicit to eat on his walks?
Ummm...I don't want to be indelicate, but...is Ziggy your first dog? 'Cause, well, dogs fart. OK, to give you some hope, some dogs fart more than others. Some dogs fart more at some times than others. Food can make a huge difference (Brogan's arch nemesis in this regard was broccoli). Different ages and stages (and seemingly random meteorological conditions) can make a difference. But basically...dogs fart. My dog Mama Jodhi used to toot herself awake, lift her head, sniff delicately, look at me with disgust on her face ("How DARE you do that in my presence!") and then go back to sleep. Brogan once farted his way every 15 minutes on a packed flight of 3.5 hours from Berlin to Malaga. Luckily the people behind me thought it was hysterical and laughed harder and harder the more he did it. He would fart, then I would hear giggles and a little "pfft" of air freshener being sprayed. Bless their hearts. I have never been so thankful for the earthy humour of the German people. I have also never been so incredibly mortified. I added a travel sized air freshener to my airplane arsenal after that. And when that failed, I bought him a car so he could fart in peace.
Some dogs do seem to be more windy than others. I would be tempted to look at his diet and consider a change of food and see if it improves. Diet can affect, behaviour and general health/coat condition/skin etc so I see no reason why it couldn't influence 'windiness'
Indy is 11 1/2 weeks old and she farts CONSTANTLY when she's sleeping - she can hotbox a room in 5 minutes!
Willow was awful when we first brought her home. It got better with a switch in diet, and age. She rarely trumps now. Shadow tends to be all noise no smell when he does. Luna did toot quite regularly, too, but this post has made me realise that she rarely does anymore, so it's probably a maturity thing - she's nine months.
This thread reminds me of the lovely old spaniel that was our family dog when I was growing up, he used to get put out of the living room for farting, funny thing though, after he died aged 15, the same smells still occurred in the evenings
Yes I agree, Cassie farted all the time as a puppy, but hardly does at all now. I think it got less when she went from Junior to Adult food.
Farting is a result of fermentation in the gut. Foods that cause fermentation are usually high in carbs and sugars. I have found my dog farts if he's eaten bread or eaten another dog's pellets. When he sticks to his raw meat and meaty bones diet, he seldom farts. There are other gassy foods like cauliflower and broccoli. Examine your dog's food for the culprit ingredients. My experience is that dogs fart more as they age, not less!!
Mine don't (up to this moment!). I suggest that you try using a different food to see if it lessens the problem.
Ash (7mths) has awful wind problems at the moment to the point of having to cover your nose, open doors and put the kitchen extractor fan on! I stupidly changed his food a while ago to a grain free one and it certainly isn't suiting him. He'll be going back on his previous food as soon as this bag is finished. I would definitely try a different food, perhaps with a different protein or grain.
Coco farts a lot. It's usually noisy - really funny. BUT, it rarely smells. I think I've only smelled his farts two or three times. He eats Skinners Duck & Rice with a tin of Winalot. He has roast beef treats. He eats all sorts of raw veg trimmings including broccoli & cauliflower. And Schmackos (they give him loose stool, but not bad wind). But he doesn't smell . Scooby had the most awful wind I've ever smelled when he was on metacam & antibiotics. Truly evil.
None if mine have had very tooty bum trumpets, but Rorys bottom is truely terrible when his colitis flairs up.my Oh just starts moaning about dead things up Rorys bum. I'm lucky I don't have a very good sense of smell.
Luckily Harley doesn't fart very often, but when she does they are usually loud and she jumps a bit then stares at everyone sniffing in every persons direction to see where it came from . Since I changed her food just over a year ago, her farts don't smell anymore.
Yes Sky has terrible wind sometimes - started about a year ago - she's 10. When we say 'oh poo!', she gets embarrassed and gives us a look then slinks off away to somewhere else in the room. It's ok when we are on our own but not so good when we have company . Changing her food made no difference. It got worse after she had HGE.
