Good morning all. I've been looking through the different forums, and I have yet to come across a thread talking about pet suffocation on chip bags/dog food bags, etc. While it's a horribly sad subject to even think about, it's very real and more common than I would have believed. A woman I previously worked with went through this last year with her 3 year old pup. She went home at lunch time, only to find that her beloved dog had passed away by suffocation with a Doritos bag on his head. Apparently when a dog puts their head in a bag, and inhales, the bag instantly adheres to the dog's face. While it's a very upsetting subject, I brought it up only to encourage all pet owners to please, please, please cut the chip bags/dog bags in half before they are thrown out. If you Google "pet suffocation on chip bags", you'll find a website that is dedicated to making the public aware of this and spreading the word. Let's keep all of our fur babies safe.
I always cut open the four plastic rings that hold beer cans together, birds and other creatures can get badly stuck in them.
I know a family that this happened to. Came home to their dog with a treat bag over his head. He was already gone. They had only left him for an hour. It was very fast. We took our pup to visit them and when my Toby was sleeping, the husband saw my pup laying there. He went to Toby and nudged him and tried to wake him up. Toby is a deep sleeper so he didn't stir or wake up right away. The husband got more scared and tried harder. I quickly came over and asked what he was doing. He said "what's wrong with him?" I said "he's sleeping." "Are you sure?" "Yes, he's a deep sleeper." Toby roused and resettled himself and went back to sleep. The husband apologized and said he was scarred because of finding his dog passed away unexpectedly. It was a sad moment.
Oh, the poor, poor man. I bet he was very upset when Toby wouldn't wake up. He'll probably never get over losing his dog, especially in this way.
I know someone who's JR died this way a few years back. Very sad. I didn't realize it's a common occurrence.
It happened here. A nice family used to cycle through our village with their little black dog running alongside. They went to our little local store, the kids bought chips. Somebody discarded a bag in their yard (it might not even have been them. The darn garbage from that store was all over) and later they found the dog, dead, suffocated. Our whole village mourned.
Wow, how terrible. Thank you for bringing awareness to this as it is not something I ever thought about.
Just awful and not something I have ever thought about either. So sad Thank you for bringing this to our attention. x
Thanks for letting know, I will tell those who come into contact with Joel often too; as they get rid of the rubbish a lot too instead of myself.
I had no idea this was possible, would have thought the dogs fur would stop the bag sticking, so thank you very much for pointing it out.
