my lab has allergies and his ears flare up a few times a year my vet always provides a antibiotic liquid but ends up costing me a fortune for such a small bottle.
I have read good reviews about zymox with hydrocortisone has anybody tried this? I can get a big bottle for about £50 after paying delivery.
Why can I not find anywhere in uk to buy from?

Sorry to hear about the allergy issues , but I truly wouldn't use any sort of cortisone/steroid type of medication without a Vets opinion or prescription . Do you know what the allergies are ? As in , environmental , or food ? You can have dogs tested to discover the trigger , which then makes it far easier to treat . good luck

I don't know what allergies but he is on prdnicare 5mg daily vet told me to try cutting down. He had blood tests last check up but I can't afford to keep doing this last year I went onto esa but do not qualify for charity help such as pdsa and obviously don't want to give my dog up.
I can afford his check ups and prednicare but was a struggle to afford blood tests and was hoping to save on the ear drops with this product

He also has good food for allergies vet recommended so I don't think it's that.
Without prednicare around his eyes go bald after a week or two
His ears flare up about 3 times a year

I'm very sorry you are having these problems :( I can't help with any advice I'm afraid but just wanted to say it sounds horrible for your poor dog, and not much fun for you either.

I really do feel for you , you`re obviously wanting to do the best for your dear dog . I know this might sound bizarre, but you could try a local honey to give him ? It has to be honey from your area , same grasses and pollens , if you google honey producers in your area, you might strike lucky . He could have a couple of teaspoons per day , either straight from the spoon or onto food , it helped one of my dogs who suffered seasonal allergies .

Were you considering the Zymox ear drops, or is there another product you were considering?
The ear drops seem to be a combination of steroid (hydrocortisone) and "natural enzymes". I'm not entirely sure what the enzymes will do here, if they have a proven benefit (sorry, not a vet, don't really know)

I would be really wary about using any kind of steroid (hydrocortisone) without advice from your vet, and it sounds like you are swapping an oral steroid for a topical one with this product.
Another point is that topical treatment have higher chance of causing allergies in themselves - so, the enzymes or liquid carriers of the Zymox could also potentially pose a problem (not saying they will, just that they might)
Lastly, a lot of "solutions" have a limited shelf life, so it may be that once open your product may just last 28 days without needing to be discarded - worth some thought.

I know you may feel a bit awkward, but have you had a chat to your vet about the financial aspects of treatment? - they may offer a way to help you out, payment plans for instance. Sometimes even a private prescription for a product available online at a cheaper cost than direct from the vet.

Sorry you are having a tough time.

They do one with hydrocortisone and one without had not decided
He would still be having his prednicare as his allergies cause other problems as well like around his eyes.
I have asked my vet about buying his medication online waiting for response

I used a PP to buy both Previcox (an anti-inflammatory) and Bravecto (for ticks) and made significant savings on both.
There are a few websites - I mostly use Pet Drugs Online
Bravecto costs just under £20 for the medium dog size which is £10+ saving over vet price even taking into account the cost of the prescription.
I does depend on the cost of the drugs to make it worthwhile.

    Hi Rolo.

I've been using Zymox for years now with my lab. Like many labs, she had chronic ear infections, and we would have to go to the Vet every other month to get a small prescription of "Surolan." It was getting costly, and the Surolan seemed more of a bandaid solution.

So I looked OTC alternatives, and Zymox seems very well regarded.

I tried the Zymox with 1% Hydrocortisone. In my opinion, it worked better then the "Surolan." My lab has had less ear infections over the past years since switching to Zymox.

    I've tried all 3:
    - Zymox with 1% Hydrocortisone
    - Zymox with 0.5% Hydrocortisone
    - Zymox without Hydrocortisone

I've found, the 1% is good if the ears are really inflamed and tender. It will bring down the inflammation down the quickest. So I keep some 1% around for just these instances.

The 0.5% I find is good to use if I keep a close eye on my dogs eyes, and I'm able to catch an infection early, and there is only a little inflammation. Remember you generally want to go with the "weakest" steroid that works. So if the 0.5% works, then it's best to use that. (This is the one I tend to use the most as I keep a close eye on her ears, so they never tend to get that inflamed.)

I also tried the 0% one. I was going to try to use it as a preventative/maintenance. However, it didn't seem to prevent it all that well or possibly I just didn't stick to using it regularly enough.

Note: When you use the Zymox, you want to keep using it for 15 days I believe it says. You want to continue to use it to make sure the yeast/infection is gone despite the inflammation going down quickly after 2-3 days.

    Caution:
If your lab is on "Predicare" (which also has a steroid), you would definitely want to check with your vet if you are using one of the Zymox's with Hydrocortisone (also steroid). Steroid's should always be used with caution as they can cause systemic effects.

    I hope this information helps.

My last 1% order was in July, 2016, and it has a expiration date in Feb,2019. So should be good for at least 2.5 years I would assume.

However, I checked my 0% order, which was in Feb, 2014, and it had a expiration date of July, 2014 (which is only 6 months!). They must have sent me a bottle that had been really old.

So if you order, just make sure you tell them to check the expiration dates, and give you a fresh bottle!

I apologize for taking so long in responding, I have not been well.
