I am like a kid at christmas! It is 3 weeks 4 days until our new baby joins us. I have seen her twice and am going again on wednesday. She is puppy no-name at the mo, any suggestions? Raych
Hello Raych, and welcome! What colour is she? When choosing a name for my girl I looked up names that meant something in a different language which connected in some way. So Aki means Autumn in Japanese (she was born in Autumn), Nisha means night in Sanskrit (she's black), Zuri means beautiful in Hindi etc etc. However, my son and I settled on Plum, we just loved it, no connection to anything!
We chose Willow, after a big willow tree in the breeder's garden. We spent a lot of time with the puppies as they were growing up, and, whenever we were a puppy short, she was always to be found under this tree. Shadow is just a nice name - and my husband and I both rode grey horses called Shadow in previous lives, so it doesn't bother us that he's yellow and everyone always assumes the black one is Shadow! It's very apt, though, as, as a puppy, he was always right on my heels like a shadow. The number of times I accidentally kicked him because he was walking too close behind! Luna is so named because we have magnificent night skies where we spend our summers in Spain. There is no light pollution, and the moon is just spectacular when it is full. I think it's nice to find something with meaning
We chose " Sam " because it seemed to imply Big and Strong , he was a big puppy who has grown into a huge 40 kilo dog , so quite apt x
Douglas=dark stream with hidden depths Midge ♡(aka Moo)= small annoying insect Rory ♡= red warrior he was very bitey as a pup. My next dog has a name but I'm not saying.
Stanley - I just thought it was adorable really But it also turns out it was the place me and OH got engaged. So I think fate brought us to that name
We adore Disney, so we named our last two labs after a Disney princess - the former Jazzmynn from Aladdin (with our unique way of spelling it), and our current bundle of joy Ariel after The Little Mermaid. ❤️
Irish or Scottish names all the way for me for my boys: Duncan, Tavish, Brogan. Next one will be Irish too! Yes - I have a dog name and no dog yet. I've had more females I got to name as fosters and I kind of like traditional English names (or what as an American I think of as a "traditional English name" lol Emma, Mollie, Sophie, Claire, Grace. I had one puppy who came as an "Audrey" and people seemed to love that name for a dog. I always liked Mylene (I was a big Mylene Farmer fan back when), too.
My pup is black. My husband and I are both registered blind but he can see a black dog better than yellow. I have no sight so makes no difference to me.
Things I have learned about choosing a name, number 1: Before you choose a name think about what it will sound like when repeatedly yelled in public across fields as he is disappearing into the distance. My big yellow boy is called Pongo.
My Tatze is named after a German Guide Dog, her name means 'paw' and she's a black Lab. I love her name but the downside is the number of times I have to explain it!
Welcome to the forum from Hattie 10 years and our rescue boy Charlie 6 years I chose Hattie, as a child I had a fascination with this name (weird I know ) but I just knew she had to be Hattie which really suits her and not very popular. I let my children choose Charlie's name when we rescued him but he was called Blacky when he came to us I do agree with calling the name out several times to hear how it sounds as you potentially will be calling it for a lot of years. x Won't your puppy already be named if it's a GD? x
Hi and welcome Raych from me and my fox red boy Bailey. I chose Bailey's name the first time we saw him because he was the colour of a glass of Bailey's Irish Cream liqueur with a single cube of ice melting in it! My OH said if I was basing names on alcohol then he considers himself lucky that I didn't choose Vodka! (little does he know I am saving that for a yellow lab that we will have one day....)
Lucan, is named after Sir Lucan, King Arthur's most loyal knight. He lives up to his name too. Ash, was originally going to be a Weimaraner but when that fell through we decided to use it for our black Lab pup instead. If I ever have a bitch it'll be called Elsie.
