is this normal? Last Sunday it started, with pink clear fluid, last day or so it's darker, more bloody and she is frankly quite stinky.. sort of extreme doggy fishy aroma.. I've never had a female dog before, I'm not sure what it's supposed to smell like. Today her bits are HUGE and she has been peeing and marking all over the garden so I guess it's all in full swing. No one round here keeps their dogs on leads so we've been stuck in the garden for exercise; she doesn't want to play, but she's eating, drinking, doesn't seem unwell .. (bit mopey and clingy).. so basically; is the smell normal or do I take her to the vet ..
‘Doggy fishy aroma’ sounds right, and also normal. It’s not a nice smell. Kind of like anchovy sauce gone horribly wrong.
Anal gland discharge can also smell fishy so there could be some of that going on at the same time too.
She seems to be straining alot after pooing, and yes there's an anal type smell too.. think we'll stick to the garden this week, the way she smells she'll draw quite a crowd if we venture out ..
They can smell and it's often normal and nothing to worry about. I'm sure you know about pyometra (sorry if I spelt it wrong) but if you don't look it up on the main site. Its worth being aware of the condition.
Yes, I read about it, and that's why I was asking about the smell, never having experienced this before! I can't see any evidence of pus, just blood and she seems well in herself, but I'm keeping a close eye. Her tummy seems a bit funny too, so will see how she is tomorrow. I think she's been in season for about one week. I think I am finding it as stressful as she is.
If she’s eating and drinking normally then all is probably fine. When you say her tummy is a bit funny what do you mean by that?
Her poo was a bit runny and she had audible and very stinky farts this evening, but her tummy is soft and not distended or painful to touch and she is behaving normally, apart from peeing in every corner of the garden ...
