Just wondering what I need in Maisy's cage to keep her warm enough in the colder weather. She is in our spare room - now 'Maisy's room' - her cage is half under a large desk and the remaining half is covered with a blanket to stop the light getting in too much. She has a single size folded quilt with fluffy vet bed on top, so it is soft and cozy. I did have a cushion and then a pillow in there too as she likes to sleep with her head raised - usually on my leg - but she chewed those. She goes to bed with a kong but no other toys. We do not shut the bedroom door, just leave it ajar so we can hear her but there shouldn't be any drafts as the bedding goes up the sides of the crate a bit and is shielded by the desk. Is this enough for the colder weather? I don't want to go overboard with it, but I want her to be warm enough.
That sounds good and cosy. Maisy should be just fine. Coco doesn't have any snug places to sleep. He spends the night on our bed He has a traditional "doughnut" dog bed for afternoons (when no-one's home) and access to the spare bed, and a nice piece of vet bed in the hall, but I don't think he sleeps on any of them. I think he sleeps on the mat against the front door, judging by the black mark I have to keep scrubbing off the wall, and the hairy floor. He is currently curled up on a very comfy memory foam bed....next to his raised bed, just along from another nice bit of vet bed - choices, choices!
Maisy prefers our bed, when she is not well we let her spend the night with us, mainly to keep an eye on her but also because she likes the company. That's why I put the quilt under her vet bed, trying to replicate a human bed. She also has a dog bed which she doesn't use, preferring the sofa in the daytime next to us - I don't know why we bother!
My two have raised beds in their room then raised beds in the lounge & kitchen. Nothing fluffy, no vet bed etc
Bailey has a raised bed in the garden, a soft doughnut bed downstairs and a fat soft cushion with a fleece blanket by the side of our bed. His choices for snoozing on are: Daytime - pulls my snuggy blanket off the settee and scrunches it up on the floor (or the duvet I have downstairs as I have a knee problem at the moment and some nights can't get upstairs so keep a duvet on the spare settee) and sleeps on those, the back door mat, under the bed upstairs or on the bed with us, laying over legs, head propped up on a bum, or if he's feeling left out right in between us with his head on my pillows! Right now he has a mix of duvet and snuggy blanket and my foot!
My dogs tend to wander around on the upper floors and choose whichever bed they please. At least two of them will usually end up on my bed though.
That's the problem with Maisy, she would be fine with free run of the upstairs. But we sleep with our bedroom door open so she would head straight for our bed - no contest.
I was wondering the same with our 8 month pup as she only has is a vet bed in her crate at night. So I've ordered the PAWZ Road Pet Dog Blankets (forum recommended) so she has something to snuggle into.
He is - although I do object to be woken up with his dorito scented paws in my face when he is sleeping on his back! That said I wouldn't have it any other way
Ooh, I hadn't thought of extra bedding for the winter, but our house is old and does get chilly when the fire goes out. Bobby sleeps in a ferplast crate with sides so it shouldn't be draughty but it still might be chilly in there. I'll have to have a look at the dog blankets mentioned above!
..oh blankets! Coco does have a Scruffs blanket - but only gets covered while we're all watching telly - he doesn't really need it. It IS a lovely blanket though...
Its so funny when they sleep on their back with their legs all spread out. When Maisy is on our bed she curls up in a ball to start with then spreads out sideways through the night so in the morning she is lying across the bed, me & OH are hanging off each edge. Every one of you is now nodding, sometimes i fantasise about having a tiny poodle or something - is that wrong?
