As you might well have gathered from the title, Charlie has been in the wars again. He cut his pad yesterday, quite a lot of blood, licking, you get the picture So last night Charlie was cued to stand still on a towel, I had LOTS of cheese, examined his paw inbetween every toe and there it was a slice, not nice He let me bathe it in boiled cooled salted water, dry and dress it. I checked this morning and it's looking fine. Charlie was so good standing still to let me submerge his whole foot in a basin of water to give it a really good clean. I am proud of him because it must be pretty sore. When I was finished he licked me as if to say "thank you". He is now in a cone as he was tempted to lick it. I want to let the air dry up the wound. I am so glad I spent a long time building up Charlie's tolerance to allow me to examine him as soon as he arrived from rescue at 9 months, which was difficult as he NEVER stood still and did everything at 100 miles an hour, well actually he still does I am always grooming him, checking/cleaning his ears, I brush his teeth, clip his nails, all of which I trained with a clicker. So I think this has helped with more medical issues I will definitely do the same thing whenever I get another puppy. x
Poor Charlie! I hope it heals quickly...but how impressive is your relationship with him, completely built on trust
Good boy Charlie, very well done to you @charlie building such a relationship. Perhaps I could learn to clip Cassie's nails by using a clicker, I've been afraid to do so because my eyesight isn't as good as it was, but a vet made such a bad job I think I'd like to do it myself.
I also have terrible eyesight - also makes me worried about cutting Snowie’s nails - I made a mistake once, he cried, I’ve felt guilty ever since!! I have found shining a torch on the nails or having really bright light makes all the difference.
Poor Charlie but what a good boy! Hope his pad heals up quickly - those can be very tricky, can't they? Sending "get well soon" thoughts.
Foot injuries are miserable... You’re reaping the rewards of all your careful preparation, Helen. Nicely done.
Thank you everyone for your kind comments Charlie has had his fair share of paw injuries but thankfully, I think, this cut was between his toes and not the pad which can take so long to heal. So after lots of boiled cooled salted water bathing, cone and no walk yesterday I took the cone off and no licking. It looks fine - PHEW again xx
