Poor girl had obviously eaten something on Sunday that knocked her for six. I think I may have been to blame. I let Lady lick out the casserole dish and although I'd check for solid onion, the gravy may have had onion juice in it but to be honest the quantity was so small I don't think it was that. Anyway she was up whining to be let out around midnight Sunday (she doesn't bark so we have a baby alarm so we can hear if she whines). Charged around the garden doing poohs all over. Same again at about 12:30 and then again at about 1:00. I ended up sleeping on the sofa with her so I could let her out without waking OH. Poor lamb cuddled into me really hard but squiggled around so much I ended up putting her on the "forbidden" small sofa. I think she was in a lot of discomfort. Next day she seemed a bit better but not much interested in anything and obviously not right so gave her some special canned food we have in stock for times such as this. Easily digested food intended for post op diet that we get from our vet. She wasn't drinking but was hungry. Gave her several small amounts of kibble in warm water that she wolfed down, but very worrying and in two minds on taking her to out of hours vet when she at last took a long drink at about 22:00! She's much better today thank goodness, but I'm going to keep her on the high tolerance food and transition her off it over the next couple of days. So what was up is not clear. It could have been the gravy from the pheasant casserole, but I guess I'll never know. Dogs! Just as worrying as small children!
Oh, what a worry. I'm sure it wasn't the onion in the gravy, it's such a small amount. A quick search says that 15-30g per kg of body weight is where problems may start to occur. Maybe it was just a bit rich for her. Maybe she'd snarfled something else unbeknownst to you. Maybe she just had a tummy bug. I hope she's back to fighting fitness soon, whatever it was.
Well done, very resourceful fixes, and for sleeping downstairs with her, not an easy night all round. Good to hear she seems to be getting over whatever it was.
Poor SBD. Obi once ate a chunk of raw onion and the vet said it wasn’t enough to have an effect. I don’t think that the casserole gravy would’ve been a problem at all from an onion perspective.
Our dogs are our dishwashers pre clean cycle. The routinely get small amounts of onion, if there is any remaining on the dishes, and it has never caused a problem. We don't leave pieces of onion on the plates, but if there is a bit, we don't worry about it. I think I would put the upset down to something else.
From an onion's perspective, on the other hand, I can see the gravy being quite a large problem. RIP, fallen allium brethren.
Thanks all. Yes she's much better but defo not 100%. She was very slow yesterday on our morning walk, but pretty much back to normal this morning. No more night issues. I think she may have a grumbling UTI though. Stopping every 5 minutes or so for a wee but nothing coming out. First wee in the morning ok though. I'm just about to call the vet and book an appointment. She did catch me out about 18 months or so ago, though. Having not done it for the first 7 years of her life she started scent marking which I thought was a UTI. Vet pronounced her fit but prescribed antibiotics anyway just to be on the safe side (she has an UTI history - a bit vulnerable in that area). She's just knocking her food bowl all around the kitchen at the moment! Unfortunately the onions did not survive the experience!
