    Hard work.

Ella will be three in April and Nathan will be two in January. Right now their relationship is hard work.

Sometimes they play so well together. They play tug, fetch, catch and 'run laps of the house together'.

Sometimes Ella is too full on and knocks Nathan over or tries to grab toys a little too rough.

Sometimes Nathan is a pain in the bum and tries to grab Ella or climb on her.

We're constantly watching every interaction and constantly watching Ella's body language. Our most strict rule is that at soon as Ella turns her head or moves away, Nathan must always leave her alone. It's the end of the game.

Slowly but surely we're watching a relationship building. She's excited to see him and runs up to him when he's been out of the house. He always says goodbye to her when he leaves and loves feeding her dinner.

When Nathan finishes dinner, he asks to give his scraps to Ella. Today he was playing in the water and kept carrying her toys filled with water for her to drink. She's also started snoozing at his feet.

Like I said, bloody hard work. But so worth it

Just lovely! When my son was born, 34 years ago, we already had an adult Springer Spaniel. They got on so well and the last photo I have of my springer is her cuddled up next to my son while he’s asleep on the settee - precious memories.

Fantastic pictures!!! Thanks for posting those. They are so good at bonding with people. I bet if you flash forward about 70 years there will be a picture of him with his labrador next to him.

    Lovely pics.

That sad thing comes to mind, can't remember the correct name, 'something or other 77' - children and dogs and the problems that can happen if adult humans don't tune in.

Thank goodness you know how to work things between the dog and the child, clearly a wonderful relationship for both and growing daily :)
