My puppy Pearl is 7mths old. I would like some ideas on more training and brain games that will work and stimulate and tire my puppy. We do find it, kongs, lie, sit, loose walk training, a lot of "waiting" before food or before opening gates.... Also I'm been upset as I had a complaint from a neighbour about my puppy barking at night. I was away that night bit like said in another post this started happening occasionally when I was home just since she turn 6mths.... The sound control person suggested barking collars, but I dont want to go that way, but I dont want Pearl to be taken away. She sleeps outside, pretty much always has and has been fine. It's not every night too. It's not a very nice situation to be in, specially around Christmas holis...☹
Hi there, a difficult situation, you have my sympathies. Do you know why she is barking? Is it when she is left, or is she disturbed by something? You are right not to take the advice of the sound control officer, barking collars are aversive and the not the way to train a 6-month-old puppy. https://www.thelabradorsite.com/night-waking-how-to-restore-the-peace/
Not nice to get a complaint... It’s upsetting. Would you consider having her inside the house at night? She’d probably find that comforting and be quieter.
No help but my brain transposed some letters in your title and I read it as "Ideas for training and brain working in a bar at night" and I thought, you work in a bar at night at take the puppy with you.
Thanks everyone. Is it ok to get up to see what it is, in-between barks? As I dont want her thinking that every time she barks I get up and see her.
Thanks for reference to that article...sounds like a normal thing that can happen. Is it ok to get up if she does it again (after waiting for a pause in barking)?
You need to know why she is barking. The old adage about not getting up because you will reinforce the barking only applies if she is barking in order to get your attention. If she is barking because of a noise she has heard, someone passing etc then you getting up won't make a jot of difference as far as reinforcing the barking is concerned, because that's not what's motivating her to make the noise. If she is barking for attention, then I would make sure she slept inside with me, because it sounds like she's getting lonely by herself. In either case, having her in the house would probably prevent the barking; she'll either be with her family, so not lonely/scared and she's less likely to be disturbed by noises outside. Any sort of training can stimulate the brain, so just choose some stuff that you and she will find interesting. Look at the Kikopup channel on Youtube for some ideas, or there's a book called Learning Games for dogs (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Learning-G...35429&sr=1-5&keywords=learning+games+for+dogs). You could also try some scent work.
