Thank you - we might try him left outside the crate when we're just out for a few minutes and see what happens. He hasn't started chewing with a vengeance yet so we may be lucky. Good advice on the chews, thanks.

I've read something similar, that they can relapse on house training at any point, sometimes up to 10 months. If we know he's had a wee and a poo we might try leaving him in the kitchen with crate open but only if we're out for a few minutes. He's so happy in his crate for sleeping it seems a shame not to keep on with that so we will for longer spells. Bit difficult to make his kitchen space smaller without building something, I think, which probably isn't going to work at the moment.
Thanks so much for your help and support - I really appreciate it and am feeling much better and a lot more positive.

Nibbler has never bothered with kitchen units or table or chair legs - only think he has had a wee go at is the skirting boards next to the gate. But just a wee bit.Wouldn’t leave him with chews or pigs ears as they can easily choke - we do leave kongs but they dont last long. We pleat together three bits of fabric tuggy material and hide little treats in the folds of the pleat - put them in tightly when you are doing it - takes him ages to find them and uses his brain as well. Pleat unravelled when we get home and ready to go again the next day. Could use three bits of old towel pleated too.

That's good to know, thanks. I like the idea of the pleat. I've always wondered whether fabric isn't good because it would fray and could they swallow some of it. What sort of fabric do you use - is it something like an old T-shirt in strips? I wondered about felt because that doesn't fray. I'll try that though, thank you!

I just use a fabric tuggy folded in half with a bit old towel tied at the fold so that I have three things to pleat together.

Ah! Got you, thanks. I didn't realise what a fabric tuggy was. We'll give that a go. Thanks!
