hello we are new to the forum. Unsure where I should be posting this as it could be a behaviour, a health concern, or something else. Baloo is an assistance dog, newly partnered up and keeps rubbing the ear and top of head Area on the floor very quickly,often. The ears have been cleaned by a professional and been told to keep check on it, but still the ear rubbing happening. Could it be behavioural, or a deeper health concern? Anyone came across this before please? Thank you And how do I create a signature please?
Do you mean a vet or a groomer? My advice would be to get your vet to check Baloo’s ears if you haven’t already done so.
Could be an ear infection or allergic reaction. Definitely vet visit. my lab's ears were bothering him and needed drops + an injection to clear it up.
Silverfalcon, glad beau's has cleared up now. Had wondered how it would be done if it is an infection. Thanks will return and get checked again.
EArs can be hard to clear up. Infection can be from bacteria or yeast or both. The meds used for one may not work on the other and some of both have become resistant to treatment. Actually, my sister, a nurse, just was on antibiotic for strep throat which apparently paved the way for a fungus growth. That's in a human throat but I wouldn't be surprised if something similar could happen in a dog's ear
There are antibiotic drops that you put into the ear canal and also rub into the inner ear flap if need be. It shouldn't be a big deal to clear up but best to get checked asap, as ongoing infections can lead to hearing loss. Other potential causes are ear mites or a foreign body, but your vet will be able to sort it out regardless. I would be surprised if it was a behavioural issue rather than just something going on with Baloo's ear. They can act strangely when there is an ear problem. I thought something was wrong with my labs back legs because he would crouch down oddly but it was actually just an itch response that was a bit haywire, due to his ear infections.
Been to vets, shiny clean now and got a review now too. Something happened recently linking to going to the vets, not the vet himself but someone else today said that I’m not giving off a good impression as I’m seriously ill today and couldn’t take him , meaning I’m reliant on others and this could affect his health. This is why I’ve taken so long to post this wondering how to word it correctly. Hope it’s ok. It’s kind of annoyed me and made me wonder what people think?
What did the problem end up being with his ear/head rubbing? I would ignore whoever said that, you've had him seen by a vet, that's what matters. It doesn't matter who took him as long as he's being cared for.
They cleaned a lot of dirt out which causing the start of an infection, but need go back to make sure it’s not come back as an angry infection. Been checking ears and they still sparkly clean luckily. So fingers crossed.
