What a worry. Years ago my young Lab had the same problem, finally one of the vets diagnosed a bacterial infection in the lower bowel and it took three weeks to a month' antibiotics to cure it. Never came back.
Well we had a good night and so far today no poo. I still don’t know what to think really. It’s now almost a week since this started. The Metrobactin is an antibiotic and she has a few more days of that. She’s up for her walks which is good and she is sleeping a lot. She is such a good girl though - I haven’t been giving her any treats on her walks and I have done no training but this afternoon I thought I’d try the little repertoire of tricks we had been doing in preparation for Friday (we won’t go if she’s not 100%). She just did them .
Good. I hope the antibiotics sort it out and there are no more episodes of diarrhoea, but just normal poo!
Still no normal poo. Argh I really hate this. Very sloppy one on our evening walk yesterday. I have a feeling it’s the antibiotic tablets but I don’t know. Red is ok in herself - going on walks and sleeping well. I am concerned she’s a bit too skinny - she’s still on i/d and I don’t know when to reintroduce her kibble - was waiting for a normal poo. No news from the vets about the sample but they did say two weeks so another week at least. We will need to miss training again tomorrow as I am giving her no treats. We will miss the Christmas tricks routine but it can’t be helped. Not related but at 12 months, Red still hasn’t had her first season. I am assuming this is normal.
Oh dear , what a worry . Yes, antibiotics can upset the tummy, so its a bit of a double edged sword right now . Re her season ,one of my bitches was about 16 months old before her first , some are even longer, so try not to worry and I hope that result comes sooner rather than later x
Yes part of me thinks it’s the antibiotics now but it’s the way it started and got worse that makes me think giardia
It could well be the antibiotics, but at least she's ok in herself. It might be worth keeping her on the i/d for longer so that her tummy has time to settle. I hope you get the results from the vet soon so at least you know more about the cause. Wispa was late with her first season too; Tuppence was much earlier. My other bitches were spayed before their first season rather than after it, on the vet's recommendation, but circumstances prevented that for these two.
What a worry for you, very wearing. Agree with others that if she's ok in herself then that's very good news.
Yes, I think that would be my thought too, with the improving and then worsening of symptoms. Have you been advised to do your full disinfecting all over again after 10 days? Our advice was: Day 1 - wash and disinfect everything - floor, toys, food bowls, cage ( I scrubbed the wire with a toothbrush) and rugs. We even washed the patio and decking with Jeyes fluid and washed down cupboard doors, skirtings where practical. And washed the dog with Malaseb (?) shampoo. Antiobiotics and panacur for 10 days. Then on day 10, repeat the whole washing and disinfectant process all over again...
No, no advice at all about disinfecting as no diagnosis yet of giardia. I think vet was ‘hedging her bets’ by giving Red the medication she has. I decided off my own bat to do a thorough cleaning but I dare say if it is giardia I will need to be more meticulous.
This morning Red had her first normal poo for almost two weeks. Yesterday I started introducing her kibble again. Still waiting for test results. It’s been a grim two weeks but it’s good to be getting back into routines. Our evening walks have been tough as I have taken out no treats (which is only her kibble). She had started pulling and walking with her nose stuck to the ground and with it being so cold, I found it all a bit of an effort. Last night, I took a small amount of kibble in my pocket and she was back to trottting along beautifully on her lead. The ‘treats’ are a great motivator.
