My puppy Heidi has started receiving attention from other dogs, we were dog sitting a golden retriever and I noticed she started to sit down when he was paying attention to her and he tried to mount her at one point. I immediately separated them and checked online for the signs that she might be in heat, there has been no bloody discharge and her vulva isn’t swollen. It happened again on a dog walk today, a dog was having a good sniff then she planted her bottom and wouldn’t get up until I called her. Is this because other dogs are now seeing her as an adult dog and no longer a puppy? Or should I be walking her on a lead only for now? She is booked in to get spayed early January.
Never say never but it is highly unlikely she is coming into heat at such a young age. VEry unlikely. Sniffing and mounting are not solely sexual in nature. Some dogs are just rude, some mount and hump for fun. Neutered males and females will hump too; other dogs, blankets, your best friend's leg. It will happen to Heidi when she is spayed too. It's something we all have to be on the look out for, either our dog being humped or being the humper.
That’s good to hear then, was just a bit worried as she hasn’t been spayed yet, mind will be fully at ease when she has been! Thanks
Just a word of caution , one of my bitches did have her first season at five months of age, its highly unusual but we did catch our five month old male puppy ( her brother ) attempting to mate with her , which horrified us, but thankfully no outcome !
Those were Jack Russell terriers, right Kate? It's even more unusual (though not impossible) with big dogs to come into heat so early. But the time before the season lasts several weeks and they already start to smell more adult and interesting. I would certainly take it as a sign that your dog is on her way to becoming sexually mature, although not actually fertile as yet. Sitting down on her bum is just her way of politely saying 'Get your nose out of my behind'.
