    ‘Tis the season!

We had all of hubby’s office workers over for a Christmas potluck dinner the other day. I didn’t really want to host because Simba + guests + food is always a bit tricky but for various reasons my place was the best. I prepared by stuffing Kongs and getting extra treats for him as distraction devices.

One guest came early to help out...Simba celebrated by stealing the tissue paper out of one of the gift-exchange gift bags I had put under the tree...he was happily ripping it up and chewing when I realized what had happened and then to my horror realized he was actually ripping and chewing the SECOND part of tissue that I had wrapped a delicate clay ornament in...rescued it with only one slight nick out of the corner...rewrapped and all gifts moved into kitchen counter...

He did pretty well as people came...of course great excitement but I managed to get food away from people before he got his nose on it.

Had to banish him outside while we had the big platter of appys on the living room table...hearing the slightly pitiful noises from outside people said, “Oh, come on, let him in”, to which I replied “Not on your life”...

Dinner went well...not TOO much sad eyes at the table...

Post-dinner meant retirement to the living room for gift exchange. I cleaned up all the food from the table and placed leftovers in fridge or as far back on counters/stove as I could so he couldn’t reach. Basically all that was out was the remains of the two delicious cakes for dessert.

During gift opening Simba grabbed tissue paper and ran away to tip and tear happily...no big deal:)...then it was my turn for picking gifts, etc and I relaxed vigilance for a moment.

Realized about 15 minutes later Simba had abandoned tissue-tearing post and that there were soft, slurping noises coming from the kitchen:confused:

Discovered pooch with elbows on the stove, head deep in the gorgeous home-made Black Forest cake, long tongue slurping away...

Thank goodness people had a sense of humour (especially cake maker who was very gracious).

No ill effects for pooch. Had a blissful sleep stuffed with kibble, frozen Kong, and chocolate cake, whipped cream, and cherries.

I hope I don’t have to host next year!!!

It sounds like more fun than slurping Kongs!

What self respecting dog would pass up the chance of a Black Forest Gateau? Especially when no one is looking ;)
(Sounds like all went well in my book, I have yet to put up the Christmas tree as Maisy pinched most of the decorations off my mother-in-laws.)
I think your dinner party will be a great memory for your guests, in years to come they will still laugh about it, remember that cheeky little dog that ate the cake?:D Well done you for hosting it in the first place.

I think it has to become an annual event. Who could resist a party with Simba as the star of the show?! You wouldn't get such good entertainment elsewhere! :D

Yes! Thankfully cake had been sampled by the humans first. It was soooo good! Not surprised Simba enjoyed it

Simba...the standard to which other Labradors aspire.

I was worried there for a bit that the story was going to end without a Grand Food Theft. But Our Hero didn’t let us down.

I know the effort that goes into a Black Forest Cherry Cake - you must have been fuuuurious! We really have to channel Mad-Eye Moody's mantra of "constant vigilance" around Labradors, eh. Xena sends Simba her eternal admiration, and I'm very relieved that he didn't need a trip to the vet's to be puked :D
