Is it normal for labs to shed their hair all year around?

    Hello,

This is the second year we've had Bowie and he's still shedding his hair all year around. We live in Melbourne Australia so we do have 4 seasons (even though now you can't really predict the weather anymore!!).

I always thought labs generally shed their hair twice a year (spring and winter) but Bowie seems to have endless supply of hair. We have to vacuum the house every day, sometimes twice a day, if we've got visitors coming ;)

    Is it normal?

I also brush him with heavy duty de-shedding brush (furminator) every second week or so - it helps but it doesn't seem to make much different with the constant shedding.

    Any advice?

Hi, we're in Melbourne too (eastern suburbs)! Where are you located?

Our girl Ella will be three in April and the only time we didn't have tumble weeds of brown hair in our house was when she had her fluffy puppy coat. She does have a big shed at the change of season but the general hair loss is pretty constant.

Well I have a 12 month old yellow Lab and she sheds all the time so no advice. Like you, I vacuum at least twice a day, sometimes more if people are coming. I have started handing out sticky mitts (do you have these in Aus?) to people as they leave .

We take her outside daily and brush her but it makes little difference.

They are all different. Tatze sheds very little, Zaba sheds a LOT.

I groom them all once a day and this helps :)

Pongo's shedding goes up and down through the year, but he is always shedding something. The ups and downs don't seem to relate to seasons - they seem to be completely random (although I can pretty much guarantee that if he goes swimming then that will trigger a mega-shed). Visitors to our house go away with a layer of Pongo hair on their clothes (just ask @Emily_BabbelHund ). I reckon I get about a Chihuahua's worth of fur off him every day.
We've just learned to live with it.....

PS - we like our hoover with a special "dog hair" attachment (brushes that spin and pick up hair from deep in carpet). And I don't change into my smart black work trousers until the minute before I leave the house. And in my car I have a brush to remove dog hair from clothes just before going into client offices....

    Hi Emily and Ella,
We're in north east of Melbourne, about 40 minutes from CBD. Glad to find fellow Oz :) How did Ella cope with the 45 degree heat a few days ago?

40mins from CBD (not during peak time) puts you somewhere near Lilydale? We're near Blackburn.

There are a few of us Aussies on here but I'm not sure that there are any others in Vic.

Ella was fine in the hot weather as she spent the whole day in the air conditioning  She doesn't know how lucky she is .

How did you survive? Aircon, swimming or paddling pool? :D

Yeah we just learned to accept it as well. I sometimes find his hair in my tea cup (or mouth when I don't see it)!!

Good idea with the 'dog hair' attachment!! Luckily we have a similar colour rug as his coat so sometimes when we can't be bothered vacuuming, we just close our eyes and pretend that his hair's not there!! :D

We're slightly passed Eltham. We've got a few acres of land :)
I wish we've got a pool! It's ok when it's only hot for a day or two as our house is double-bricked so it's generally 13-15 degree cooler inside! I think it's going to be another hot summer :(
Hope to find more Aussies here!! ;)

Definitely all different - my boy sheds all the time. My girls only a couple of times a year. They're all shedding at the moment and there's tumbleweed*-sized clumps of dog hair going by all the time, even with daily or twice-daily vacuuming. If I ever decide to get a fourth Lab, I'm going to have to get a live-in cleaner :D

    * I saw real-life tumbleweed for the first time a few months ago. I couldn't stop giggling, it looked so cliched!

I barely ever groom mine because their coats are better without it - it leads to dry skin and a dull coat in my black girl especially if I do it regularly. But sometimes, it's just gotta be done!

    I've posted this before, but it's a good'un :)

Keir has, so far, confounded all expectation.

He’s a long coated GR/FC and he doesn’t shed at all. Some comes out on brushing but not much. The birds are going to be disappointed! When I used to brush Bruce (GR) I got another dog’s worth out! I saved it in a big jar for spring nesting birds. Lots of happy tweeters and lovely soft nests last year!

But I do think my words ‘so far’ are key here - I’m sure is day will come :)

My late Sam used to shed terribly , at times his fur would roll around like tumbleweed , getting into rooms he never frequented , like the bathroom ! Nelly doesn't shed , at all , and strangely , I miss it x

I think I know what you mean! :)
I read your Sam's blog, so so sorry about Sam. But I think in his short life, he has touched and changed the lives of people around him.
    Wish you best with everything!

My old dog died about 18 months ago. We are still finding his hair behind things. I have industrially cleaned the carpets but his fur still haunts us. I can't help thinking how amusing he'd find it. I moved the fridge out of its unit and there was a a whole black labs worth of fur:D
