We have a almost 10 month old lab and he was limping a lot. We took him to the Vet and they did Xrays and blood work and it all came back normal. First time it went away fairly quickly keeping him more in the crate. This time is more severe and he limps a lot. Has anyone had this problem? They suggested getting the specialist to look at him just to make sure and we are going to do that. They did say he would out grow it. Thanks Michele and puppy Quinn
Hi Michele, I also have a puppy who is almost 10 months old, and every time he hurts himself or limps I immediately expect the worst... Currently he is on lead walks only, because he has two painful toes in his front left paw which mean he is limping, probably hurt himself yesterday, so he's on enforced rest and painkillers until Monday, when we will see the vet again and if there is no improvement we'll have an x-ray taken. I have to say my vet takes any limping very seriously, and has never suggested Merlin is likely just to grow out of it... I would certainly see a specialist about any recurring limp. I would also recommend keeping your pup as slim as possible (I seem to remember in another post that you said he was quite a big dog - by which I don't mean fat!), and avoid over-exercising him or letting him use stairs or jump too much. Ugh, they do love to worry us, don't they???

A recurring limp most definitely needs further investigation My girl first limped at 5 months of age which was treated with painkillers and restricted exercise and everything was fine. She started limping again at 7 months and our vet scheduled x-rays straight away which showed that she had Elbow Dysplasia. There is a condition, called Panosteitis, which can affect some large breed dogs which disappears with age and is often referred to as growing pains but the usual way of diagnosing is by x-ray. Please contact your vet and ask for some x-rays and a referral to a specialist.
His xrays did come back clear but that is what they are saying about him to. So I guess we wait to see what the specialist says Monday. He is going to be on larger size for sure his last weigh in he was 75lbs but not over weight he is just a big boy lol. They do worry us for sure.
Unfortunately my vet also thought our x-rays were clear, it was the specialist that picked up the problem when the x-rays were greatly expanded . Fingers crossed that all is well with the specialist on Monday, and don't forget to let us know how you get on.
