We have a Kong that has a small hole in the side - about the size of a coin. It is perfect for kibble as it dribbles out slowly as Maxx nudges it around and keeps him occupied for about 15 minutes. However we tried stuffing it and freezing but he gave up really quickly and walked away. Is there a different shaped Kong that is better suited to stuffing and freezing? Or do we just persist until he understands that he will get his treat if he persists in licking it?
Hi Maxx's mum, I'm Mason's mum from the Uk, there are different coloured ones depending on age or size of dog. There is a really good thread on here about stuffed kongs maybe the different ideas might help good luck
Hi @Maxx's Mum I suspect you are using the wrong kind of kong?? The one with the hole in the side I think is a kong wobbler, and as you say, you fill if with food and he nudges it to get the food out. https://www.amazon.co.uk/KONG-Wobbl...8&qid=1516054483&sr=8-3&keywords=kong+wobbler You get them in small medium and large. The type of kong that you stuff and freeze are a hard rubber with a small hole on the top and bigger hole on the bottom. They look like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/KONG-Class...8&qid=1516054634&sr=1-1&keywords=kong+classic So, although they are both "Kongs" they are quite different and designed for different purposes (well, they both give food, but in a different way ) The second type of kong are the ones we stuff with food and freeze. Sounds like @drjs@5 has got it spot on! I think you are using a Kong wobbler (also brilliant) but to freeze you need one of the rubber sort
@drjs@5 is right. You can also get different sizes and hardness. With Bowie, I started with the classic one and moved to the 'Extreme' one for tough chewers https://www.amazon.co.uk/KONG-Extreme-Dog-Toy-Large/dp/B0002AR0II Just put peanut butter/vegemite (we're from Australia ) on the small hole and freeze it a bit to seal it, and you can fill in with anything. I normally seal the top again with peanut butter to make it harder Have fun!

Sorry didn't realise you're from Australia too - so not amazon.co.uk The other brand I quite like as well is West Paw because it's very hardy and the only one that stands the time and Bowie's hard chewing. But that's probably for later, when Maxx gets older and starts to become a chewing monster I think you can only get West Paw online from Australia, which is a bummer!!, no commercial pet stores stock them.
Are you trying to tell me that the chewing will get worse when he gets older! Not possible! Pleeease! I found an online site that will deliver a Kong to Australia free of delivery so I am looking forward to trying it out soon and I'll look into the West Paw for later on too. Thanks for that
Hi Maxx’s mum I too live in Australia and Kongs are available here in pet shops, some training groups and many, many Australian online pet products websites. You don’t have to order from overseas! As far as I’m aware West Paw products are not sold in shops here though.
Yeah you can get Kong in almost all pet stores in Australia. And West Paw, sorry what I mean is, most pet stores in Australia don't stock them. I think you can only get it online from their stockists, just google West Paw Australia! Arrghh... the downsides of living in Australia - you don't get all the US/UK brands - if yes, the price is exorbitant!! I had to ship a dog bed/couch from US and the shipping cost is almost the same as the price of the bed
I recently saw a new Slo feeder which is made by an Australian company. To buy it online the shipping costs were around 3 times the price of the feeder I think it's the only time I haven't bought an item and save my money instead - after all it's not as if we really needed a new slo feeder .......
The Kong I am looking at (for stuffing and freezing) is for dogs 13 - 30kg but then I noticed it is only 10cm tall! Is that correct? I'm worried he will swallow such a little thing whole. I had a mental picture of something as big as our Kong Rambler?

Hahaha... I know what you mean! I've developed super human ears and eyes on the back of my head since having Bowie!! He'll be like the top of my suspect list if things go missing
I have just been reading through your Blog...Bowie certainly has had his share of adventures and misadventures. I was so sorry to hear about his injuries. David Bowie is also one of my favourite artists - great name
I use medium and large kongs for mine. I introduce the large ones at about 4 or 5 months, at a guess, but they still keep on with the medium ones. It just depends how long I want them occupied The trick is to start with them unfrozen and with the food not too tightly packed. Get him really excited about them before you start freezing them or, as you say, he might get bored with them.
