Hey, Cody has a smelly/gunky ear at the moment. I have some finger pads from Pets at Home but obviously can only use these for cleaning the upper visible areas (more like tidying them up) as don't want to put my finger down his ear and risk further problems. Does the stuff you bought have a fragrance? Our vet gave us Malacetic Aural the last time he had it (when we first got him last April) which stinks. Its like a floral smell and Cody knows the minute the bottle is opened and bolts. I am looking for a fragrance free ear cleaner as he doesnt mind them being touched but knows to bolt with the bottle comes out.
If there is an odour from the ears, I would be chatting with the vet. Only because ears can be a bugger if not addressed early enough
Hiya its not like the odour he had before when they gave us this stuff (they gave us this for yeast and it worked - i just cannot get near him with it) they recommended using it if he had the same problem going forward. He is just musty - but he has been out daily in puddles and woods etc. It doesnt look hugely mucky but is as you say enough for me to catch early. Just need an odourless cleaner
I was speaking too soon here, since then Cassie has been walking around smelling like a large lump of goats cheese! It looks like it's more related to wet winter weather, as it's a year since she saw the vet regarding her ears. She's not scratching them or finding them irritating, nor are they red or inflamed, so I've sent off for something called Garlic Juice, @Carys, I don't know if it smells or not. It is recommended for cleaning, not for treating infection
Hi I bought the Virbac ear cleaner that @kateincornwall recommended. It doesn’t have a very strong smell. We haven’t used it yet as it was a false alarm with the ears: they didn’t flare up in the end.
The garlic juice has just arrived, it smells like, well, garlic! I've just wiped the outer ear as advised, she didn't mind at all. I'll wait to see if other people notice an improvement, or whether she just smells like a goats cheese with garlic in
My Bruno also has this problem of ear infection. Nowadays his ears are warm, whenever I massage his ears, he likes it. But now I feel concerned, if everything is fine. Reading your thread, I could make out it is very common among dogs....
